The Boofon
This is too important a subject to be lost on another thread. Is anyone else appalled at this story that they are going to demolish the Triple Kirks. Shameful actions by the City Council. It's a grade A listed building for f**k sake not some piss poor prefabricated monstrosity built after the war. Utterly disgusting. Triple Kirks Further research shows this. Incredulous Aberdeen's historic Triple Kirks site is set for redevelopment. The derelict church site has been acquired by the Stewart Milne Group, and the company hopes to lodge plans to transform the A-listed property. Built in the 1800s after being designed by architect Archibald Simpson, the red-brick tower and spire has been lying derelict since the 1970s. Other proposals for the site have failed to get off the ground in recent years. Malcolm Deans, of Stewart Milne Group's commercial property division, said: "We are currently developing our proposals for this acquisition, and expect to take a scheme to planning for a Grade A office development before the end of 2008. "Triple Kirks will provide a unique office environment in the very heart of the city with superb views over Union Terrace Gardens." If the views are going to be so f**king good, why has Stewart Milne pledged 5 million pounds to concrete the gardens over? Someone please tell me these websites I've linked are an ellaborate hoax. K-9
Don't see the problem. Building been derelict for 35 years and is falling down. Spire is staying so no problem with it at all. In fact would as far as to say thankfully Aberdeen City centre being brought into 21st century. Link to comment

No. I've already said do what you want with it. I just feel it's terrible that major historic buildings like that have been allowed to fall into such disrepair. A crying shame. To then try and fix the situation by plastering a heap of glass around it is nothing short of scandalous. Each to their own though. I like my architecture to be true to form and not some cheap and nasty tart up job. Link to comment

That explains a lot, we would still be in caves with loin clothes if him and his ilk were in charge! Roads, what do we need them for!! No point in building an airport, who would come here!! You can't destroy this marshland to build a golf course as some toads once lived here!! We were fine without oil so don't need it now, bloody boats polluting the harbour, no body wants it!! phoenix
Well it has been allowed to deteriorate until they get the reaction they want - 'knock it down'. We have , like many other towns , sacrificed our architectural heritage so that the rich can get richer. They then sell it back to us at a hugely inflated cost to the public purse. The attitudes of the businessmen in their pursuit of money is woeful , they are the Darth Vaders of the 21st century and our former citizens would be birling in their graves. Philistines , I'm afraid , the World is being run by Philistines.....especially in this neck of the woods. Would not happen in some parts and it would not happen in other countries. I fear not. We're destined for a life of pigeon sh*t and mockery. Link to comment

Dandydon D
About time something was done there. I dont agree with knocking it down and leaving the spire. That artists impression looks very bizarre with the spire sandwiched in the middle of 2 glass blocks. whats the point on that ? I though they would at least keep the outer, remaining walls and kinda rebuild it. There is a decent book you can buy called "Lost Aberdeen" and it details what Aberdeen once was before all the 'grand old' buildings of fine architecture were demolished for horrific 60's concrete jungles. Bloody shame looking back. Link to comment
dervish
Once it's gone it's gone and for an office building (which kinda will be in isolation of other office buildings) seems a bit sh*t from me. Recognising that it looks awful right now, as I suppose it's meant to for these purposes. Link to comment
spamspamspam
Dont know what the fuss is about. Wasnt that long ago it was going to be flattened and a big glass bowl was going to be built around the spire, no one was bothered about it then. If something isnt done soon the whole lot will fall down, better this than some catastrophic collapse onto the road below in rush hour... Link to comment

In fact would as far as to say thankfully Aberdeen City centre being brought into 21st century. As I said in another thread, but bears repeating here as it's too important to be lost there: So you saying the wreckage of the triple kirks, unused and unattended since the 1970s, which no-one wants to keep as it is obviously, and havn't done in 40 odd years, should be left to lie in it's current state, or should the council, having allowed 40+ years for someone to come in and save it, throw in the towel and let someone develop it, while it must be pointed out, retaining the kirk spires? Seems fair enough surely? Me personally, I' raise every f**king kirk to the ground, so I only see positives in the latest news. Link to comment
