England Not Good Enough To Win Euro 2012

Gary Neville damning of England's Euro 2012 hopes

Gary Neville believes England are not good enough to win Euro 2012, saying they lack mobility and invention.

After Friday's 2-2 draw in Montenegro media coverage focused on Wayne Rooney's red card but Neville argued that England had more pressing worries.

"What we should be talking about is the spine of a team that has no mobility and can`t keep the ball," he wrote in the Mail on Sunday.

"The real issue is that the spine of the team is not good enough."

The defender, who won 85 caps for his country, pulled no punches in his assessment of Fabio Capello's side.

"When I look at it coldly, a team that has John Terry, Gary Cahill, Scott Parker, Gareth Barry, Darren Bent and Rooney in its central positions is nowhere near good enough to take on the major nations such as Spain.

"I"m not having a go at individuals; there are some very good players among those names. [but] Rooney aside, there is hardly any pace, very little invention and hardly any rotation of positions. Compare that with the spine of Spain: Carles Puyol, Gerard Pique, Xabi Alonso, Xavi, David Villa and Fernando Llorente."

England take on Spain in a friendly at Wembley next month with Neville keen to see a number of younger players given a chance.

"Let's be clear, England are not as good as Spain but you can't just accept they're better," said Neville.

"You have to find a way to stop them, to disrupt the rhythm and to hurt them going forward

For those on here who maybe do have an interest in non Scottish footballing matters, what do you think of Neville's comments here? Is he right? Is he wrong?

He's right and wrong.

"Let's be clear, England are not as good as Spain but you can't just accept they're better," said Neville."

So they are not as good as Spain. That's a statement of fact. However you cannot accept they're better.

They either are or they aren't. Make your mind up.

He's right in his assessment in parts but he's basically filled a page of complete waffle.

He's spot on. Gareth Barry is a weakness for England and Man City. England are always too scared to try anything new. For exaple, they will never in a million years start Cleverly in the Euros even if he has a great season at United. It'll be the same old same old. Which is good, because they're failures.

Germany or Spain will win it, Holland as outsiders. Nobody else has a chance.

People will probably be having a go at him down south for this but he's just being honest, and he's right. England aren't good enough to win the Euros. Certainly not with guys like Gareth Barry in their team anyway.

They'll get to the knockout stages as per normal but get found out by a Germany, Spain or even Portugal who seem to have the knack in recent years of knocking them out in the quarters.

I've always thought it's the Guff media who prevent them from succeeding by making them out to be better than they are. They do have a good team but just don't seem to gel at major tournaments which is very bizzare.

Germany will storm to the trophy

Anytime you say something like this, it doesn't happen.

England's best performance next summer would be reaching the Semi-Finals.

But, as usual, we'll probably bow-out at the Quarter Final stage once more.

Capello will probably stick with Wayne Rooney, despite his mediocre performances in the qualifiers and his woeful displays whenever he plays in a major competition for England.

By "can't accept they're better" I took it to mean that you don't just settle for getting beaten and try to find a way to negate the threat.

Poorer teams need to do this, as we do this week.

That's exactly what he meant.

I thought it was fairly obvious what he meant too! Taking it further, he probably feels the older players are to set in their ways to adapt to a different style to play spain where as the youth will be more receptive.

Deep down, england know hes right but its a massive call dropping big name players.

the reaction of england media is brilliant.

I could be wrong but they just automatically qualified for a major finals with relative ease yet they are all blasting rooney or discussing who the next manager should be. the players reaction at the end was interesting, you would have thought they'd be happy about qualifying but not really.

Are the qualifying stages becoming as boring as the CL groups for the big teams??

They had a piss easy group and were far from convincing.

Of course there's going to be a reaction about Rooney, they'll have expected to stroll the group, anything else is not acceptable for them. Rooney was stupid and he's their best player who'll miss games at the tournament now.

They're different from Scotland, we'd just be happy to be there, they want to win it.

So called best domestic league, highest paid international manager, huge financial resources, media spin all adds up to expecting to win majors, even though history tells us they are no more than a 1/4 final team unless home advantage.

Holland, Spain and Germany are all better, and several other would be on par with them.

I hope the Germans lift the Euros.... desperately wanted to see them win the World Cup. Their brand of football was by far the most entertaining to my mind.

Go Team Germany.

I think they're probably the only team who could stop Spain winning the Euros this time around. They were very, very good in the world cup and I don't think they dropped a single point in the qualifiers. The midfield is very strong with players like Mueller, Ozil, Khedira, Goetze and Kroos.... all those guys are 24 or under too! It's frightening actually!

The only problem for germany is that they rely on Gomez too much.... and he can be very hot and cold.

That is a problem right enough, although you'd like to think there's other German strikers pushing for a place for next year who might spring a surprise, i mean i hadn't really heard much of Ozil before the World Cup.

He is just stating what everyone outside of England already knows.

Thing being they always have the "Next generation" coming through to look forward to. This is the same cycle that has been happening for years. Build up the youngsters as the team who will lift the world cup. Next thing we know they are all passed it and not up to the task. But its ok they have world class youngsters ready to break though again.

Sooner the realise that in fact they are 2nd tier in international football and that there are at least 6-7 teams better than them Spain, Brazil, Holland, Germany, Portugal, Argentina and Uruguay. You could put Italy and France as well but maybe not at this moment.

So 1/4 finals of world cups and euros are where they should be getting beat.
