Life's Great Questions

Have always been intrigued by the concept of 'nothing'.

Is there such a thing as nothing? I mean, according to physics, space is just an average of nothing, with particles springing in and out of existence. But that still qualifies as 'something' in my opinion.

The only true 'nothing' must have been before the big bang, but with no-one there to verify it (and by their presence exclude the possibilty)...

It's a mind fuck and I reckon that the idea of 'nothing' is fundamentally flawed. Naive.

Fixed it for you mate.

Otherwise spot on.

Maybe there is 'nothing' outside of the universe, but could you go there?

Well, i suppose that depends on your definition of what a universe is and whether or not you believe in the existance of a singular (uni) verse.

I am a firm believer in the multi-verse hypothesis, and the many worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.

I think in 2/3 thousands years, provided we haven't killed and maimed each other, some pretty amazing things will be possible.

If we could measure it and detect the presence of it, then why couldn't we go there?

We couldn't go there because by the definition of 'nothing' it doesn't exist. There is no space or time...

who laid the egg?

By asking that question you've highlighted your own ignorance.

The egg wasn't ''laid'' by anything...

The singular egg-cell of a related species mutated gradually over time, to generate a genetic code which confers the properties of what you would consider to be an egg. The egg hatched to generate the new species - a chicken, and the cycle completes.

Correct. Confirmed by Stephen Fry on QI.

Think you need to go back to biology 101.

Who laid the egg? still no anwer.

F*ck sake.

Next time you decide to ride your moped with no insurance, why don't you ride it down to the library.

The first egg of the species which you recognise today as the chicken, was laid by a species who had a shared genetic lineage with the chicken and some other species.
