Correct bergen.

 

Its a cold war term. The Americans being typically modest and not self righteous pricks called themselves and their allies First World. (ie all NATO and capitalist nations) and called Russia and the commies Second World.

 

Abody else, including bongo bongo land were called Third World.

Interesting I'd always thought it was Old World = Europe. New World = Americas; Third World everyone else especially if poor. Didn't realise it was cold war nomenclature.
