Sheep#1
Parked up tonight and switched off the engine and removed the key and the lights, radio, interior light and all the dash panel lights stayed on. Tried switching the engine on and off a few times etc, but nothing would make them go off! Thankfully the lights, radio went off when I switched them off, but the dash panel was still all lit up and all the warning lights etc were flashing and my fuel gauge and mileage aren't working. Had to disconnect the battery so it didn't run out. Anyone experienced anything like this before?!? Seems bizarre how nothing would go off, even with the key out the ignition etc. Apart from that, it drives as normal. Link to comment
dervish
I know fuck all about cars but my guess would be the switch in the ignition. How old is your motor? Link to comment

Expensive thing to get fixed? It's pretty old, 53 plate Peugeot 206 GTI. Think this is the final nail in it's coffin though and I'll be upgrading shortly. Link to comment
dervish
Honesly I'm guessing, could be a short in the wiring loom or that but fuck knows. Doubt it'd be expensive to fix, maybes a few pennies to find the short or that though. Link to comment

johnstrac
Usual story, if it takes 2 mins to find and no spares than it's cheap, if not then bring your credit card. Link to comment
Sheep#1
OOF!!! really? lights staying on mate? thats a good £300/£400 quid that Ha, maybe in your Crapi, with its antique parts! Well, when I reconnected the battery today all was well again and has been all day when I've been driving around, so fingers crossed it stays like that. Link to comment
Mouse
That's french electrics for you. There is the auto electrical place up on Lang Stracht, a bit pricey but do a good job Link to comment
Terrorfex
Disconnecting the battery for more than 30 minutes on virtually every car is the way to "hard reset" the ECU (Engine Control Unit). If the problem hasn't resurfaced, it's more likely to be a fault with the car's computer system. Have them plug the car into a diagnostic reader and check for error codes. Link to comment
tainboy
Ccm. Comfort control module. French (and Italian) cars have probably the worst electrical systems I've ever had the displeasure of working on. Mk1 golf by far the best. On or off. Can't go wrong with that! Link to comment

Got to watch those engine diagnostic things. They can be a handy dandy excuse for mechanics to not use their brains. Case in point. Colleague of mine last week; her 5 year old Jeep Grand Cherokee suddenly had no power... still driving but foot down and it was a crawl. Took it to Jeep and they plug it in. Yep, the turbo is blown. $7k that'll cost you to fix. After she got over the heart attack and was able to listen to advice she got it towed from that garage (they tried the scare tactics on her as she was doing it... and upped the quote to $8k at the same time) to another. THAT garage... the guy just looked at the bloody thing instead of relying on a computer and saw.... a hole in a hose. $200 part, $400 replacement including a service and she drives out with the car good as new. So yeah... those diagnostic things... they're good as far as they go. But I think that some bigger garages use them as a money making enterprise. Link to comment

They're only aids - hints for the more complex / confusing problems rather than something to base your diagnosis on alone. Kwikfit are masters at basing their entire opinion on what's wrong with your car by what the diagnostic machine's outputting. Case in point for me - My last car was a Clio which started misfiring and losing power. I took the car to Kwikfit and told them to change the Spark Plugs and HT Leads, but they were insistent that couldn't be the problem and plugged in the diagnostic machine; flashing up failed MAF and O2 Sensors at a cost of Link to comment
tainboy
Serves you right for going to kwikfit. And decent mechanic is only as good as his experience on that system. Link to comment
zander
OBD systems are good if used properly, as you say people often look at faults and go with what they see. Best following a guided plan, which will tell you to check hoses, wiring etc. Link to comment
forbesz1903
Never go to kwik fit, they are complete rip off merchants, took my focus in with a crack in the exhaust and was told I needed a new cat, but because the cat is part of the front section of the exhaust I would be 600quid. Took it to turra, they goes cats fine we'll weld the crack and make a new bracket to give it more support, Link to comment
Ke1t
I'm not the most mechanically minded person in the world, but my own rule of thumb would be that if something of mine started to spontaneously bust into flames it's probably time to buy a new one. Link to comment

Bobby Connor
The engine management light has been on in my motor for a few months now. I've chosen to ignore it, but the MOT is due soon. I'm guessing this sort of fancy bollocks has fuck all to do with the road worthiness of my silver machine (+duct tape). It goes fine, the engine is purring and all the lights can go off or on. Anyone able to confirm? Link to comment

Anyone able to confirm? Might be worth buying a fault diagnostic tool for your car. 30 quid and lets you see the fault so you can reset it on your own. Doesn't fix but cancels light. Good for use before going to a garage as well. You know what's wrong and if garage say it's something else you drive off after calling them lieing bastards. Link to comment

Anyone able to confirm? The engine managment light has been on my wife's A6 Avant for 4 years!!...sails thru the MOT every time with an advisory...her's is down to a non Audi Cat...still passes Emission test but probably not recognised by the Audi ECU...I'd miss the wee engine light if it wasn't on!! Edit If your worried about the light...disconnect then reconnect the battery before you put the car in for it's MOT (make sure you've got the radio code)...should stay off for long enough (usually 200 miles or 20 starts) to get the MOT cert with no advisory Link to comment

Anyone able to confirm? MOT regulations have changed - whole load of new test procedures started in January. Also more stuff starting April 1st , including failure of all electrical warning light , so if your management light . SRS ( airbags ) Trac control lights etc are on make sure its through before then !!! Link to comment
Terrorfex
As of April (I think) all warning lights lit on your dashboard will be automatic MOT failures. If the light's on, there's a fault in the system and that system is therefore not to be trusted. I'm always amazed to see people happily driving their cars around with the "Check Airbag" light lit. Seriously? Link to comment

Iv been running with my airbag light on for months, I know it's a poor connection in the wiring to the seat, as I've changed them for recaros, don't see the big deal tbh, I'd b more worried if something like abs wasn't Working.
