Guest
Two days running now that the depressed has mentioned "little more to play for other than pride" or "meaningless game" regarding our match tomorrow. Whatever happened to the desire to win, entertain the paying customers and finish as high up the league as possible? Half the problem with this damned top 6 crap is that the media buy into it so much. Who give a flying feck about the top 6! When we dispose of the infirm, we can rejig the league so it doesn't include this charade. Link to comment
tup
I'd go as far as to say the top 6 was a relatively ingenious smokescreen manufactured by the Old Firm and their media arselickers to divert attention away from the top 2, which is much more pertinent, as it never fucking changes. Link to comment
tup
I replied to this, and it appeared in the embezzlement thread. FFS. Link to comment

Even more embarrassing when teams like St Johnstone and Motherwell, whose home attendances are often lower than that of our away support, are finishing in the top six. Whilst the split is a joke, if you finish top half you've got a very good chance of getting into Europe also. Link to comment

Anyone who openly advocates that a top 6 finish should be held as some sort of success story, needs shot. Finishing 6th for a club of our size and history is embarrassing. Not winning a cup for nearly 20 years is embarrassing. Being in so much debt is embarrassing. Faltering crowds is embarrassing. Supporters are being led down the garden path with this top 6 finish nonsense. It's the issue of whether you finish in it or not that is meaningless, not games that have no baring on whether you qualify to play the top 5 teams one more time. And to blow your theory out of the water, if you were 7th placed, 6 points behind 4th place, you'd have jack all chance of qualifying in a European position come the end of the season, due to the split. That in itself is anti-competitive and ensures 'meaningless' games for the rest. However, don't ever describe an Aberdeen match as meaningless, ever. Link to comment

Exactly, The top 6 has been seen as some sort of marker as successful, Its not, it should be a prerequisite for our club to be in the top 6 post split. Link to comment
fine-n-dandy
Can label it all you want but simple fact is this season (& most) that top six at this moment means EVERY side there has a chance of European football next season. That has to be our target EVERY season, as in finishing in a league position that has us in Europe & the higher the better. Bottom six is & always will be a complete failure by us top four would be & should be at the very least EXPECTED by us & top two would be a great achievement. Cups, only winning is acceptable Link to comment
wilm1542
Being in the bottom 6 after the split means that you can only finish as high as 7th in the league which is not where a club of Aberdeen's stature should be aiming for or finishing. The last 5 games ARE relatively meaningless in the bottom 6 unless you are in a relegation fight. 7th place is hardly an incentive but having said that we should be aiming to finish as high as possible after the split. Would happily trade 7th place for a cup final appearance though. Link to comment

However I am pissed off this year that we miss out on the Huns at home and the obvious piss take opportunity. Link to comment
K-9
Top six is an absolute minimum for club like afc. But like it or not we have five nothing games after split now with only interest if we win semi. Link to comment
Ke1t
Only way this will be a good season now is bringing the trophy home. According to my calculations, it'll be three more years before a Non-OF club wins another trophy... and even then there's a 60% chance it'll be the worthless League Cup. Link to comment
granite sheep
If the SPL are hell bent on having a split, at least have the balls to do it properly. Post split should have the points reset to zero, and the top 6 fight it out for the league championship / euro qualification, wi the bottom 6 all in a relegation dogfight. Then again, that may backfire spectacularly.. Link to comment
