Platini - Thinking Of Having Just One European Compeition

Recommended Posts

So a team finishing 6th, upper mid table, would qualify for the Champions league...

Currently, the secondary competition generates far lower revenue for clubs than is produced by the Champions League, a problem Platini is increasingly concerned about,

No longer the glory of winning, its the revenue that dictates.

Another nail in the coffin of the smaller teams

European Super League is inevitible.

That would be absolutely fine if the glory hunter teams just left their domestic tournaments - let them piss off and play in Andalucia or wherever - and then give us a good old fashioned Scottish competition, the odd European tournament or two and no prospect of ever being "promoted" to the european super league as that is where they should take all the fat cat clubs, stick them in and let them rot.

There was nothing wrong with the three competitions knock out format other than the fat cats never got enough money. Money has absolutely ruined football Europe wide. The group stages of the CL are already mind numbing god knows we don't need more of them.

Get back to straight knock out to put some excitement back into football. If a team is good enough they'll win the games and generate the money they deserve, if not they'll get less. Who am I kidding, that would be common sense.

if the midweek football fans switch off in droves cause its boring that might pull the plug on the money going into it.

which will eventually happen.

Get rid of seeding as well. I've never understood the concept of seeding. If you are good enough, you shouldn't be given an easier ride to the final.

Seeding is there to ensure the showcase games are at the tail end of the tournament.

Or in the case of World Cup/Euro qualifying, to ensure that all of the bigger teams get through, which obviously wouldn't happen if they were all drawn in the same group.

I think it's a pretty good idea if I'm honest! Could see us get 4 places in the champions league and if we can get through 2 the groups stages as we did with JC in the Europa a few years ago we would be in the big time! Would be great for the scottish game if every 2 or 3 years we see ourselves or any other team in it apart from the old firm!

Give the winners of the Europa League automatic entry into the Champions League.

Bet Spurs and the like will give a monkeys about it then, that then adds far more interest to the competition.

Make the Europa League for league qualifiers only and bring back the ECWC.

Ban the Huns from Europe forever.

Sorted.

why stop at the huns? their paranoid chums can get to fuck too

Been saying this for ages.

Make a new trophy for the "Champions League" as it isn't the European Cup anymore and it's an insult to previous European Cup winners to call it such.

But surely that's what the frog cunt wants isn't it?

Don't think it is.

He's really saying UEFA don't make enough cash out of the UEFA Cup so he's scrapping it. The smaller teams that would've played in that like us, the Swedes, that lot that got lucky this season from Cyprus etc can get knocked out in the qualifiers via the seeding system leaving group stages and beyond for the rich boys.

Its not about competition, its about how much money UEFA can rinse out of TV companies world wide.

Used to be that you had to win your national title and then go on to skin every other true champion in Europe. Aberdeen and Dundee Utd both came within a whisker of doing it when it was an actual achievement so not sure what is now so difficult for multi-million teams in Europe?

the prestige has disappeared from this competition. To some of these sides its more or less a domestic tournament. The prestige has gone from it and it has sucked the life out of so called lesser cup compeitions around Europe.

I got shot down for saying its a joke competition before but I think some took it the wrong way, I didn't mean the football was shit, I meant the competition itself. In fact the CL is barely even a competition these days.

Exactly. I packed in watching all that contrived shit years ago, yet when I say this to anyone, particularly the lapsed Dons fans who like to make snidey ramarks about how shit the Dons/SPL are while wanking on about their trips to old Trafford, they tell me they can;t undertsand why I would miss out on watching "the best football onthe planet" etc etc. Unthinking Murdoch puppets that they all are, it's a complete non-event of a competition and a travesty of the tournament that used to be the European Cup.

I actually believed Platini may bring fresh ideas to the table, and thought 'this guy may be good for football'.....how wrong was I?

That's the saddest part he came in with all these ideas and I believed in it too, he's making it even harder for smaller clubs. It's fucking tough to support an ordinary club these days.
