Poodler
I'm a wee bit puzzled If scientists are expected to announce later that they are closer to finding the Higgs Boson, would that effectively prove that the universe was created by something other than 'GOD' and that all religion is phony, thus leading to world peace? Are there still sane of mind people who believe that a higher life form sculpted our earth and shaped the universe? Of course that's a rhetorical question. I know the answer already. In answer to your question, I would say, definitively, 'NO'. There are still millions of people who continue to deny the theory of evolution, even in the face of overwhelming evidence. Another perfect example are the many dating techniques now routinely available to scientists, which prove beyond reasonable doubt that planet earth has aged on a geological timescale (... far, far older than the couple of thousand years some religious types would have you believing in). The discovery of the Higgs Boson (if that is indeed what is going to be announced) will allow scientists to prove (only to people capable of thinking for themselves) that our earth and the universe began with a big-bang. No. Of course not. The standard model doesn't prove the creation of anything, it just provides a means of rationalising and approximating the physical environment around us. You don't need the Higgs Boson to realise that there is no such thing as a God, the early pioneers of statistical mechanics understood this as early as the late 1860's. Link to comment

'God' is nothing more than a series of fall-back positions. As science advances, mysticism retreats, and does so in a pretty ungraceful manner. Denial becomes the mainstay, coupled with an unhealthy dose of bizarre rationalisation. I've absolutely no doubt whatsoever that in the immediate future, if it hasn't already, some Christian organisation or other will come out and tell us how the Bible, written by monks based on the anecdotes passed down for hundreds of years and originating with illiterate goat herders, they'll tell us how the Bible actually tells us all about the Higgs Bosun particle. The LHC, and the billions of Euros of research to get us to this stage, was all just pointless waste, because just reading the Bible would have revealed the Truth, with a capital T. This can join the ranks of all the other religious fall-backs... like discovering the Earth isn't the centre of the universe, or that humans and dinosaurs co-existed, but they were too big to get on the Ark and that's why they're extinct Link to comment
