If you had to make a ten song compilation/playlist of songs by Scottish groups/solo artists (one track per band), what would yours be?

A tentative start from me would be:

1.Beta band: dry the rain

2.Primal Scream: When the kingdom comes

3.Teenage fanclub: don't look back

4.Big Country: In a big country

5.Jesus and Mary Chain: God help me

6.Travis: Writing to reach you

7.Proclaimers: 500 miles

8.Runrig: Loch Lomond

9.The Corries: Flower of Scotland

10.Franz Ferdinand: The Fallen

Some good choices, and I'll need to give this some thought, but I'll try not to fall into the " best known for " trap.

If you are familiar with Danny Wilson and Aztec Camera for example, there is absolutely no way you would have picked those songs.

Impossible to pick 10. Some bands I'd pick several.

But for a pick n mix here's 10:-

Big Country - Chance

Associates - Party Fears 2

Marmalade - Reflections

Rezillos - ( My Baby Does ) Good Sculptures

Jesus and Mary Chain - Head On

Shamen - Move Any Mountain

Sutherland Brothers - The Pie

Nazareth - This Flight Tonight

Skids - Circus Games

Blue Nile - Downtown Lights

Seems ludicrous that Annie Lennox doesn't figure, nor Rod Stewart, although not technically Scottish. Nae AWB, Alex Harvey and nae Frunkie Miller

Fxck it something'll need to get the dunt cause I just listened to Donovon - Hey Gyp, fxckin great tune.

Biffy clyro - Justboy

Frightened Rabbit - Heads Roll Off

The Unwinding Hours - Tightrope

Idlewild - The Remote Part/Scottish Fiction

Malcolm Middleton - A Brighter Beat

Jesus and the Mary Chain - Just Like Honey

King Creosote - Leslie

We Were Promised Jetpacks - Quiet Little Voices

The Xcerts - Crisis in the Slow Lane

I'm going to leave the last one as I'm positive I've missed someone obvious. Albums are easier to pick.

To be honest it is pretty criminal not to include one of the following 4:-

Blockbuster

Hell Raiser

Ballroom Blitz

Teenage Rampage

The Sweet quite a prolific singles band in an age when singles sold in mass numbers, and probably deserve inclusion in a top 10.

I shudder to think how good Sweet would have been in a punk rock era as opposed to Glam Rock

Aereogramme - 'Post-tour, Pre-judgement'. Under-rated band and sadly missed. 'A Story in White' is a great album.

Falkirk's finest. Arab Strap - 'The First Big Weekend'.

Take your pick from Mogwai's back catalogue. For me - '2 Rights Make One Wrong' is my favourite.

Glasvegas - 'Geraldine'.

Biffy. 'Christopher's River'

Idlewild - 'American English'. There most accomplished song I think although their earlier and rawer material is excellent as well.

I forgot about Geraldine. I love it, brilliant lyrics.

:applause: Idlewild. One of the best bands I have ever seen.
