Windows 8

Recommended Posts

Got the Samsung ATIV Smart PC with Windows 8 and I'm struggling.

Been looking at Youtube videos and the likes for assistance but I really need a sit down session with someone to take me through it all. And it keeps on making some notification sound that I can't for the life of me find out what it is but it's doing my head in.

Anyone else on Windows 8? What do you think of it? I certainly like the feel of it I just want to know how to work it properly.

I've got Windows 8. Quite like it but find myself using google quite a bit to find out how to do things. Couldn't even figure out how to shut the fucker off for the first couple of days. Windows Store is a bit crap still but I'm sure they'll start getting more apps. Jumped right in, even got myself a Windows Phone now.

Typing this on an iPad though.

Great! clangers2.gif

Don't despair, you can always put it in 'Desktop Mode'... which is going to be creakier than an octogenarian's fanny.

This is the bridge to moving away from Desktop to Mobile devices, and I've been dreading this day. Mobiles have a fraction of the power and NONE of the flexibility of a desktop, aside from you can stick a mobile device in a pocket/carry case. And for a mobile device touchscreen is the shit.

On a desktop, however, it's not the shit.

I'll be avoiding upgrading from 7 to any subsequent OS for as long as possible.

Cheers guys. I'll be using it for work - Office and surfing. I just wanted a smaller laptop as the Dell I have just now is massive.

Tried watching Breaking Bad from TV Links and it didn't work. So went back to the Dell.

The main thing I want to find out about is the bloody annoying notifications/alarm sound thing that goes off randomly.

Could be one of your app notifications. Swipe in from the left and choose settings. Then change pc settings, choose notifications. You can turn off the notification sounds. If that works try turning off notifications for some of the individual apps instead. Could take a while to try them all though.

Apple man Spam?

Aye... its all what you're used to though. Yon tablet/laptop jobs look quite swish but the reviews online havent been that great, from what I've read windows 8 is good for tablets but not pc's. I've been thinking about picking something up for work but it took me long enough to get used to using OSX without trying to get to grips with windows again so I dont think I'll bother, I'll just stick to the ipad for meetings and the macbook at home.

My primary input into this thread will be something along the lines of 'Fuck Windows 8'.

Touchscreen technology on a desktop is like tits on a beer can. Good to look at , but serves no fucking purpose whatsoever.

Fuck Windows 8

You don't need to use the metro interface though, behind that its pretty good.

My old job was based on OSX and it took me ages to get to grips with it but once I did I loved it. Work gave me a laptop so I could take it home and get up to speed, it was whatever came before Macbooks, ibook maybe? But when I changed jobs it was back to Windows so I wanted a Windows laptop and bought a Dell with Windows 7. It's still going strong but it's just too big to take to meetings and travel with and the likes. I've got a macbook and ipad at home and I'd love for them to be work tools but it seems to be too difficult (for me anyway) to figure out how I can use them with a windows system at work.

Also using the Macbook and a windows pc can be infuriating with the subtle differences in keyboard layout.

i use a macbook with both OSX and Windows 8, suits me fine. I find OSX somewhat simpler, but sometimes a bit to simple, and surprisingly I still prefer Windows for my software development work

I got told about this when I was going to by an iBook a few years ago. However it sounded too complicated for me! This is someone who last night plugged the charger for the smart pc into the headphones jack and wondered why it wasn't working. clangers2.gif

It just takes me a good bit longer to figure things out than you guys!!

I'm lucky, my works server is entirely online so I can log in through any web browser on any type of machine.

On the other hand it means you have no excuse for not checking emails etc when away.

Way of the world eh? 24/7 workers. I can access some work stuff at home like emails. I went on yesterday however to find that I can't get logged on for some reason, ah well. I'll get round to fixing it sometime.
