Asteroid Da14

If you find yourself at a loss tonight (or while down at Pittodrie if the game is particularly boring), look up and towards the constellation Virgo, where Asteroid DA14 will make the closest approach to Earth of any object of equivalent size, ever.

It'll pass closer to Earth than geostationary satellites orbit, but in stellar terms it's nothing to put Bruce Willis and Ben Afleck on alert for.

Should be visible between 1930 - 2330.

Apparently it wont be visible with the naked eye, need binoculars, quick reflexes and the knowledge of exactly where to look to see it.

It'll be heading "up" from the constellation Virgo. Easiest way to find that is to download the excellent free "Google Sky Map" on a smartphone and use that to point yourself in the right direction sky-wise.

If you don't have a pair of binoculars handy, you can see the asteroid transiting via this link, from an observatory in Brisbane, Australia this morning.

Got sky map, great app, going to be at pittodrie so won't get the chance to see it ( plus I don't have binoculars now I come to think of it). Will check the link out.
