rumpus
Some disabled guy in France had to drive at 125mph when his car (Renault Laguna) accelerator stuck on and brakes failed. Poor guy had to drive all the way to Belgium until his petrol ranout. Link to comment

dunc_afc
Was his disability so bad he couldn't just turn the engine off Apologies if im being daft but would that work? It wouldn't cause the engine to seize or something due to going at however many thousand rpm and suddenly having no fuel in it? Link to comment

Nelly
no queues, no junctions, no roundabouts, no contra-flows?? would have crashed within 2 minutes if it had been in the UK. Link to comment

You can turn an engine over and over with no fuel in it. The fact you turned the lube oil pump off would be your big problem. i certainly wouldn't want to try it. Link to comment

daytripping
Putting it in neutral is surely the option. Link to comment

No. Oil pumps are pretty much all driven direct off the crank shaft so that if the engin is turning it is getting oil. Link to comment
tainboy
Putting it in neutral is surely the option. In neutralit would rev its nuts off and potentially cause catastrophic failure. A plug or Conrad thrown at 9000rpm could involve death. Link to comment

caledonia
The car i use for work has in the past just lost power and you are still able to steer and get to the side of the road providing you have enough forward momentum. Link to comment
Ke1t
Just open your door and stick your fit doon. If you're wearing a sturdy pair of boots like I always do you should have no problem stopping a Renault dead in its tracks. Might damage the sole of your boots, but lesser of two evils, na'at. seann coirthe
This Laguna probably had the keycard ignition system, that means he would have had to push the button to stop and start the car. This has a failsafe that stops you accidently switching the engine off when the cars going above a couple of miles per hour. As someone said above knock the thing into neutral and let it coast to a halt...then switch it off. I've been in and around a couple of cars when the throttle has stuck open and it fair gets the heart beating. There was a guy in the states a couple of years ago thatdied when his cruise control on his Ford went tits up and he ended up crashing the car. He was a cop and had time to phone 911 during all the drama and still wasn't able to switch off the thing or put it in neutral Link to comment
