The United States is the only advanced economy in the world that does not guarantee its workers paid vacation. European countries establish legal rights to at least 20 days of paid vacation per year, with legal requirements of 25 and even 30 or more days in some countries. Australia and New Zealand both require employers to grant at least 20 vacation days per year; Canada and Japan mandate at least 10 paid days off. The gap between paid time off in the United States and the rest of the world is even larger if we include legally mandated paid holidays, where the United States offers none, but most of the rest of the world’s rich countries offer at least six paid holidays per year.

 

Of course, in practice, richer workers are able to negotiate for both paid vacation and paid holidays. It’s poorer workers who can’t take any time off.

So among richer workers, almost all employers offer paid vacation and holidays, and quite a bit of it. Among poorer workers, less than half get paid vacation, and even when they do, their employers offer a lot less of it. This is one more way in which the poor often end up working much harder than the rich.

The thing with that, LGIR, is that you negotiate your annual salary before you start working with a company. So you're being paid X amount of dollars for 52 weeks of work, regardless of vacation time.

 

The only people affected by unpaid vacation time will be the hourly workers, and again that tends to be the people in blue-collar, lower paid jobs.

 

You also have to recognise that many white-collar workers are working, or available to work, even after the 9-5., whereas Sergio at the Kwik-E-Lube is at the bar pounding beers after 5pm... he's done for the day.

 

I've remote accessed into clients from hotel rooms in various holiday destinations... so while the wife is out frolicking on the beach in her Burka, I'm training some clown in Royal Oak how to left click a mouse. But then it's the same for the wife. She's spent time video conferencing with her clients while I'm in the bar pouring gallons of local paint thinner down my neck.

 

Doesn't happen often, but to say poorer workers work harder is probably very inaccurate. Salary workers simply work their extra hours off the clock.

as usual Kelt, you make a good and valid point. a salaried worker will likely put in extra hours. but they don't have to always. and, i'd imagine in a number of instances, salaried workers might be able to adjust their days/hours worked to take advantage of compensatory time off -- at least occasionally.. the blue-collar, hourly worker won't ever have that advantage.

 

i think the point i was most drawn to was that even for white-collar workers, the time off needs to be negotiated. it's not just accepted that there are minimum paid vacation/holiday days for all workers. that's a little sad for a country as wealthy, in many ways, as the US of A is, no?
