In Vitro Meat

Recommended Posts

if something actually comes of it, would you switch to in vitro meats/poultry?

it's an odd concept, but i like it. if it saves arable land to grow food for more people, and not feed for animals for people to eat, that can afford meat.

i doubt it would ever spell the end of actual meat though, even if it became popular and efficient to "grow' your own meat. presumably there'd still be much higher-priced real meat, in smaller quantities, for those that could afford it.

would you switch?

I don't like the sound of that at all, we shouldn't interfere with nature when it comes to food, I wouldn't touch it.

Meat comes from animals and birds, long may that continue. If it is to be introduced into the human food chain it would need very long term testing, feed it to prisoners or such like for at least a 30 year period to show it has no long term health effects. Look at BSE, we still don't know the damage that is going to produce long term.

I did once hear that KFC chicken was grown genetically but it was a fat bloke in the pub who told me that, I took it with a pinch of salt

Everything is grown genetically.

He probably meant they stuff chickens full of hormones to make the chickens bigger.

The downside of that is that you end up getting massive amounts of artificial growth hormones in the food supply, turning guys into frosted-tip having bitches.

Oh, and it increases the risk of cancer.

Banned everywhere, fortunately, except.. you guessed it.. Murica.

No he said they were headless and just grown as breast and legs.

They do go through a load of chicken, wonder where it does come from, makes you think. I would imagine those chickens don't have a great life if they do have heads.

And not so long ago half our meat products were turning out to be horse meat, if that gets into our food chain so easily the genetically modified stuff would as well.

Non-story. If it takes 1/4 of a million dollars to make the Burger, and lambs are shite animals and taste terrible.

Reddy please up your posting standards, there has been a massive drop off in your output since the start of May.

Looks good (spunky chin) was clever enough to post an intellectual reponse in the thread about the spy.

Cow, you're just hacked off cos she made it abundantly clear she won't be requiring your penis any time soon. if at all.

I still have hope and will send you photographic proof when geography is not an issue and the deed occurs.

I've moved on min. I'm after a retired school assistant with dyed hair.

Lamb burgers are a complete non-event regardless. I once ate reasonable Lamb meatballs but Burgers need to be beef. Beef from a Cow.

i realize it took an astronomical amount of money to develop and come up with the first patty.

my thought was eventually, if it worked, it would be like a breadmaker or toaster on your kitchen counter. but a meat maker. :) pop a starting bit of whatever in first thing in the morning, and come home to a pound or two of some sort of meat by day's end. that would be awfully handy.

You are losing jobs and tax towards the state.

Step up to the Mic Reddy.

not completely. there'd still be a need for farmers to grow crops to feed people instead of animals. and there would still be animal farming of some sort, albeit on a smaller basis. so a need for slaughterhouses and butchers and such. just not as many. people would adapt and find other jobs. just as they have when other large manufacturing or agricultural sectors have changed.
