NorthernLights24
Fifa and Uefa have lost an appeal against a European ruling that the World Cup and Euro Championships must be shown on free-to-air TV in the UK. In 2011, the European General Court said the UK could keep the events on a list of "protected" events of national sporting interest broadcast for free. It means the two tournaments cannot be sold exclusively to pay-TV firms. Fifa and Uefa had appealed, after saying they could not sell the events fairly for their real value. But the European Court of Justice - Europe's Supreme Court - has now said the original decision in the General Court (formerly Court of First Instance) in 2011 was correct. The BBC and ITV had already secured the rights to broadcast the football World Cup finals in 2014, and they were guaranteed of being shown free-to-air. But there had been fears that moves towards a pay-TV model would have been in place in time for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, should Fifa and Uefa have won their case. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-23288211 Great news. FIFA and UEFA can get to fuck, greedy arseholes. Link to comment
diamondsr4ever
I said years ago people will lose interest in international football - and it will end up 'petering out' on all fronts and more so the fans. I stand by this. why do you think that? Link to comment
diamondsr4ever
I think yer right on the friendlies for sure, I canna be arsed with them....unless they become meaningful like Scotland v England, Holland v Germany etc etc.....but if the rankings are still going to be based on these games the nations will still keep playing them...but they are shite..... I think it would be wise for national teams to play " compedative" games where they will make money and good tv money.....or at least training camps to work on shape/formation and drinking comps. however I do think Uefa and Fifa relaise they need to inject the international game, hence the up-lift to 32 teams in the world cup.... dunc_afc
I disagree. Money wise yes, entertainment value not a chance.Because FIFA have had to sacrifice quality to allow sub standard teams from traditionally non footballing areas of the planet to play, in order to raise footballs profile (profits) in these areas. Which is half the reason why scotland will never get to another wc yet the likes of North Korea and New Zealand will make regular appearances. Link to comment
