DEREK McInnes today confirmed he has been given clearance to sign another defender for Aberdeen FC.

The club directors cleared him to make another signing as Aberdeen FC braced themselves for bad news over Chris Clark.

McInnes confirmed the 32-year-old is set to have exploratory surgery to the knee injury – suffered while they were on tour in Dublin – after their 3-2 friendly defeat by Peterhead at Balmoor Stadium.

Thoughts on:

Mark Wilson

Danny Grainger

Garry Hay

Others?

That is good news, as K-9 pointed out elsewhere, starting the season with one recognised full back, who, lets be honest, is pish, is not a great idea, yes we have players that can play there, but Jack is wasted there, Shaughnessys fine, but what happens if he or Robertson are injured, and Magennis should never be allowed near there as he's good at bursting forward, but doesn't have a clue on the defensive side. the one player that did well there was Russell in the game he played right back last season(can't remember who against), was a bit of a revelation actually, maybe thats the way to go as he was truly shite at centre half the last few months of the season.

Will be interesting to see if we get the Russell of the first few months of last season, or whether its the latter part of the seasons form we get, could be the difference between a great season and the usual drivel.

I would avoid Garry Hay if there is a younger, more hungry option available. Grainger would probably be a good signing though, has had some good performances

I would also be keen on signing from out of the box, not your standard spl/league2 travellers. What about a signing on loan from the EPL or abroad? Or even a lad from the lower leagues of scotland with a point to prove.

or what about Pascal Chimbonda? :hypno:http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/23424749

loss of considine at centre is a bigger loss imo than Clark.

We do have players that can go to right back (shaunaussy, Jack, Anderson)

We do have players that can go left back (Reynolds Roberston (at a push robson)

we have Anderson Reynolds and shaunaussy fit to play in the middle

Not particularly worried about full backs I am worried about centre backs

I was concerned about both full back positions before any injuries anyhow. Jack much better centre mid and Shaughnessy not a natural at right back, even if his first team appearances have been restricted to that position. As for left back, Robertson is our only 'natural', but just don't think he fits the bill (in that position anyway). Chris Clark was never going to be a permanent full back anyway, so injury or no injuries I feel they're areas we should have been recruiting in (or at least one of them).

As for centre backs, I'd be happy enough with Anderson, Reynolds, Consi but as you say we're just another injury away from a position that really can't be filled, unlike what we can do with full back slots.

Get in a good left back. Haven't had one of those since the heady days of Ritchie Byrne.

I thought Davie Robertson was going to get the sack from Phoenix, but results have started to pick up... and he owns the team, so he's gan naewye.
