Henry
Council chiefs in Aberdeen are looking at plans for a tram system in the city. The authority’s administration wants backing from the Scottish Government for a study in to how a new light rail network would affect the city. The council’s finance convener, Willie Young, said the project could see connections from Dyce to Aberdeen International Airport and from the harbour through Torry to Cove. Councillor Young said the authority need to plan ahead in order to adapt to infrastructure challenges posed by a number of housing and business park developments planned for the area. More than 30,000 new homes are planned for the city over the next ten to 15 years. The proposals are included in the council’s Strategic Infrastructure Plan (SIP), which is due to go before a council meeting on Thursday October 31. A council report said the authority needs to look at the possibility of introducing a tram system, similar to other European cities. The report states: "As we look around the world, and Europe in particular, we see more and more cities of Aberdeen’s size developing rapid transport systems or light transport systems, which connect communities to major strategic sites, including universities, business parks, harbours, airports, stations and city centres. "We will start to investigate new ways to maximise connectivity between new developments arising from the new local development plan, including continuing discussions with Nestrans and Transport Scotland about planning and funding." Mr Young said: "If you go back 40 years and if we had done this, I don’t think we would have the problems in the city in terms of traffic congestion. All we are asking is for the Scottish Government to do a feasibility study to see if it can happen and how much it would cost." Link to comment

BrianFaePerth
Trams are shit. If a bus breaks down, then all the other buses drive round it. if a tram breaks down, the whole network grinds to a halt. Snow, ice? Forget it. You also get right-on lefties talking about the environment and how everyone should be forced in to the cattle carts to go to work. Or maybe that's just a Bergen thing. Cunts. Link to comment

spamspamspam
If it was done properly then it would take a load of traffic off the roads, make getting around a lot quicker and easier and would hopefully be a lot cheaper way to travel than the £5 return for 4 stops or more First do. Then it is Aberdeen so it would be 3 trams running during off peak times going to Cove, Mastrick and Garthdee and will do nothing but clog up King Street and Holburn street even more than they already are. dave_min
A proper Tram system in Aberdeen would be fucking awesome. But as it's Aberdeen Council we're dealing with, I expect an expensive fuck-up which will never actually happen. Link to comment
