Ke1t
Interesting thing about it is that the comet has developed 'wings' as it approaches the sun. Anyone remember the big kerfuffle in 2012 abut Niburu coming to fuck us all up the arse... a 'winged disk', as recorded by the Sumerians. that only passes by us every so often, and brings mucho death and destruction? Celestial bodies with 'wings' are rare enough, in fact I can't think of any, so for Ison to start developing wings right now is somewhat coincidental if not disconcerting. The chances are that this thing isn't going to come within any kind of dangerous range of us, so it's not going to hit the Earth and wipe us out, but a lot of people believe that many pandemics in history have been occured when the Earth passes through the debris field left behind by a comet... space-borne viruses falling into the atmosphere and setting off plagues and weird diseases. The Chinese thought as much, and even recorded mass death events following from the passing of comets, and kept a record in a handy-dandy book. Ancient Chinese astronomers chronicled numerous episodes where the apparition of comets preceded plague and disaster. Meticulous observations were compiled in 300 BC in a series of books known as the "Mawangdui Silk" (Ling-feng 1976) It details 29 different cometary forms and the various disasters associated with them, dating as far back as 1500 B.C: "Comets are vile stars. Every time they appear in the south, they wipe out the old and establish the new. Fish grow sick, crops fail, Emperors and common people die, and men go to war. The people hate life and don't even want to speak of it." -Li Ch'un Feng, Director, Chinese Imperial Astronomical Bureau, (648, A.D). A good number of scientists believe that there could be viruses and bacteria living in and around comets, in fact next year the Rosetta probe will arrive at a comet and look for signs of biology. If there is bacteria or viruses present on comets then it's fair to say they could land on any planet passing through their path. It would also be fair to say that we likely wouldn;t have any natural defence against extraterrestrial bacteria. It's speculated that shit like SARS and the flu pandemic of 1918 had their origins in space. The conclusion is that that the doomsdayers were a year out, it wasn't December 2012 that Niburu was coming, it was December 2013, and we're all going to die of Space AIDS. Link to comment
CrazyBullSheep
Also another thing that caught my eye about this Fizzer is that when it Navigates roon the Sun and heads back the way the tail will be in front, I mean whit the fuck????? Link to comment
granite sheep
It's caused by the Solar Wind. The sun doesn't just give off heat and light, it also gives off a constant stream of charged particles called the Solar Wind. That's how comets have tails, the dust and gas leaking out of it's being blown by said wind. So when it goes around the sun on its way back outta the Solar System, that's how you get that weird effect of it going tail first. Link to comment
fine-n-dandy
It may not go around the sun.It may just fizzle up in the suns atmosphereIt may be deflected around the sun & pass by it coming out the other sideIt may not even reach the suns atmosphere They reckon it's around 2km wide which is just around the lower limit size of them seeing a fantastic show from it if it manages to stay intact & go by the sun & that's what the boffins are hoping for, or something along those lines. I'm hoping for various debris to be spat back out by the sun & for them to hit the weege (well two football stadiums at least) Link to comment

I never thought about that I always thought that it was travelling so fast no wind could affect it, Granite sheep....... I salute you Link to comment
NorthernLights24
ISON is now in view of the SOHO probe - http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/data/realtime/c3/512/ (site seems to be loading very slowly right now) Link to comment

NorthernLights24
Just been reading that it looks like what appeared on the other side was just the dusty remains. An amazing tail but the nucleus appears to have broken up. Starting to look like ISON didn't make it after all Disappointed as I was looking forward to seeing it. I loved viewing Hale-Bopp when it was a spectacular sight in the night sky back in 1997. Hopefully the next one doesn't fizzle out like ISON appears to. Link to comment
granite sheep
Magic! Looks a belter judging by the SOHO probe's photos. Anyone wanting to see this fizzler, best bet is to look to the east, maybe southeast about an hour before dawn. The Guardian reckons it'll start to be visible on Sunday but it'll be hugging the horizon, however as the days go on it'll rise higher in the sky but will be getting fainter http://www.theguardian.com/science/2013/nov/25/comet-ison-astronomy-uk-sun-stargazing-christmas-december EDIT: Just read NL24's post. Gutted if it's true! Link to comment

NorthernLights24
I see that there might be hope yet for Ison as the BBC story has changed from comet was destroyed to maybe something made it - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-25143861 WIll be interesting to see if enough has survived to give us something visible to the naked eye over the coming weeks.
