11-0 aggregate defeat against Manchester City and Liverpool, teams they are challenging for a Champions League spot.

They got an easy Euro Group, Anzhi had a false seeding since their rich owner drastically cut the budget and sold off all their good players.

I'm sure there will be a fair amount of comments from Villas Boas about the players purchased. Lamela was an absolute shocker of a signing, good in Italy where he gets so much time on the ball, but was going to always struggle here. Soldado was useless without service, but their midfield is full of workers and any "flair" usually comes in the shape of Townsend who likes a long shot.

Was ridiculous of Villas Boas to persist with a 4-2-3-1 clearly not working though. If he hadn't been so stubborn with it, he may have got better out of the squad assembled. After yesterday's game, Suarez had scored two more goals than Tottenham in the league. Shocking for a team with Champions League aspirations.

Can only beat whats put infront of you.

Only 1 defeat in last 5 games and only a couple of wins away from being in a really solid league position

Man City have been turning over everybody and had to play third of the game with 10 min

His tactics and excuses have been terrible, obviously some of the players brought in, in the summer weren't his choice but still, he hasn't improved any player there this season.

AVB is an uninspiring man. To be an effective manager, you need a capacity to inspire.

I'm amazed he got the job in the first place. It was obvious at Chelsea that he wasn't capable.

7 goals at home in the league in 9 games.

I think we all know that solid league position doesn't always tell a full story.

There were hints yesterday from Villas Boas that the relationship with Baldini wasn't good, and I think he has to take the blame.

Spurs have been awful to watch this year though and have been on the end of two humpings. Having spent £100m improving the squad, I think they were expecting good football.

Signings hes made have let him down,

Most of the players he signed were excellent on paper, losing bale at such a late stage hasnt helped his cause much either.

In particular it couldnt be forseen that erickson, and Soldado would struggle so badly.

I agree on this. Remember a fair thread on here about the time when Liverpool sacked Dalglish and Villas Boas was the preferred choice. Pointed out that although he did well in his native Portugal (mainly with a team already very strong domestically and a great record in Europe), he'd struggle outside his comfort zone. Last season he was saved by Bale making them a one man team. When he has had to build a team this year, he has struggled with the resources available. Very much a his way or the highway type, but doesn't have the character to make that work.

Did AVB make the signings or did Bandini?

Tottenham did, is the official line. Baldini is there as Director of Football, and therefore ultimately controls that side. How much input Villas Boas has, is guesswork just now. Post game yesterday there were comments that suggested that he wasn't quite happy with the signings there. Jol said the same about Comoli when he left. Think Harry Redknapp insisted that there wasn't to be a DoF when he was there.

They lost Bale for £85m but spent around £100m on others and it's not worked out. Tottenham blew their best ever chance last season of finishing above an average Arsenal team, have suffered some shocking defeats (3-0 at home to West Ham in addition to the City and Liverpool thumpings) and look a million miles away from where their budgeting to be. Everton look more likely to challenge for a CL place than Tottenham right now.

Some chairman have been too quick pressing the panic button after a couple of results, most notably Clarke at the weekend, but this one, given the failure to secure top four last season and the poor return on the expenditure in the summer, was justified.

Money very poorly spent. Too many players in same position which inevitably leads to unhappiness. None of them had made an impact so far this season.

Steve Clarke's sacking was harsh. But this is acceptable. That performance yesterday was howling. Soldado completely isolated and just never felt like they were ever going score, and previously solid defence starting to creak. Lloris also has too many blunders and rushes of blood for his pricetag/reputation.

New manager inherits an imbalanced squad, but a talented one. Needs to unearth a working system quickly though. Hiddink or Laudrup would both be top appointments. Capello would be interesting but doubt it'd be any more attacking than AVB.

Not sure. Getting Russia there in the first place was a good achievement. Given their horrific record at the World Cup and lack of an in-form striker (just did a short blog piece on that - http://futbolgrad.com/striking-shortcomings-make-russia-wasteful-world-cup-bet/) jumping ship while ahead might be wise.

If he goes to the WC and Russia fail to make it out the group stage (Belgium, Algeria and South Korea) he's out on his arse.

Does anyone actually give a fuck?

Spurs are nothing, irrelevant foreign club who never win anything.

You've changed your tune Tup min, I thought you were a big Spurs man.

Be careful, don't give up on them too soon, if you state you're giving up on the EPL altogether and they put together an unlikely title challenge you may end up with egg on your face.

Spurs in getting above their station shocker.

A team whom think they can be better than what they actually are.

They have been better than Liverpool in the last 2-3 seasons though, and while Brendan Rodgers has taken his time building a team and taking it forward, Villas Boas has done the opposite. You can point to Bale going, but Suarez being missing at the start of the season didn't curtail Liverpool all that much. I don't know what the DoF position is at Liverpool just now, but Rodgers should be giving credit for putting out the best team available in a system that suits this year, despite missing key players at different times. New signings over the last year have improved the first team and squad considerably.

Tottenham can't afford to put £100m out on transfers and not put up a decent fight for a Champions League place, and they were/are going to be nowhere near them this season.

I think it was you I had the discussions with on Villas Boas when Liverpool were looking. You wanted him, I said you shouldn't. Are you happy now that they went for Rodgers over him? Not that you care of course...
