Scotland U21 1997

Recommended Posts

People talk about Eion Jess never reaching his potential but Kevin Harper must be considered a bigger flop.

I remember Bagan and Burke both looked terrific prospects at Kilmarnock. In Scotland we have an incredibly high proportion of talented young players who, for whatever reason, fail to kick on to the seniors. IMO we do have talent in this country, we just don't know how to nurture it.

Scotland v England U21 at Pittodrie late 70's was very close to being our own Hillsborough, must have been close to 40,000 in the stadium, was mental trying to get in, I was just a youngster but thought I was broon breed, ended up getting lifted over the beach end wall by a policeman on the inside, right over the wall, mannies outside were passing the kids over the top.

No surprise tickets and vouchers happened not long after that.

Surely wasn't the last time you were lifted by the cops.

Dayts - yer speaking about the under 21 0-0 draw I've spoke about in other threads. Pittodrie was fuckin' hochin. At least 12,000 in the Beach End alone. I reckon about 38,000 in the ground. The floodlights were busier than most away crowds that come up nowadays. 1981 I think.

I remember folk being up the floodlights that night as well, officially 24,000 but yes must have been well over 33,000 at least. It was a Euro qualifier and they had beaten us 2-1 down at Coventry and the 2nd leg was set up nicely.

Most players would become full internationals, McLeish, Brazil, Wark, Archibald for us and Butcher, Hoddle, Robson,Crooks, Regis for the guffs. I think me and my old man were in the OWS that night

I was there with my Dad..was 16. WE got there early but it was hopeless couldna get in, thousands milling around outside as the game began.

If there was 38,000 inside there was another 5000 could not get in.

Bonus for me was Dad took me back to the pub ithink it was the Bobbin but not sure..were he bought me a few pints.

I got so friendly with local plod I got pulled over beside the Merc garage on King Street while walking to Pittodrie one day, I'd sold my flat on the Friday, they wanted to know where I'd moved too, :)

I gave it up just about then.

My other halfs workmate was a special constable, she always said I was top row in the rogues pics before any games, good days, I know you don't approve but fuck it, wouldn't change a thing, they were fun days.
