Sonoftherock
I have a friend who's going to be competing in the commonwealth games later this year... anyway his girlfriend is travelling over to Scotland to support and has been asking me if I could recommend somewhere for her to stay. Now it's been 15 years since I last lived in Glasgow, so I have pretty much no idea.... She's looking for accommodation reasonably close, or within easy travelling distance to the either the national hockey centre (https://plus.google.com/110108799292461164905/about?gl=au&hl=en) or the athletes village (The 2014 Athletes' Village will occupy a massive 38-hectare site bordered by the Clyde, Springfield Road and Dalmarnock Road opposite NISA and the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.) Any help, or recommendations would be gratefully received! Thanks! Link to comment
gla5gowdon
Hmm, digs will be hard to come by or super expensive. Pics or GTFO. Link to comment
Sonoftherock
Aye, cheers for that... does anyone know of any good hotel/general accommodation search engines, that'd be useful for Glasgow? Link to comment
gla5gowdon
Aye, cheers for that... does anyone know of any good hotel/general accommodation search engines, that'd be useful for Glasgow? Booking.com is pretty complete. Couple of small, independent hotels not far from the stadium that might be her best bet for cost? Hotel 10, Kings Park Hotel etc. Are probably shite but a bed is a bed, eh? Link to comment
dave_min
How about this gaff? http://www.jurysinns.com/hotels/Aberdeen Trains to Glasgow every hour. Link to comment

Yep, thanks again... will pass on the info. Not entirely sure what the budget is. They aren't short of a few dollars though, and the current exchange rate is pretty favourable for Australians travelling to the UK. By the sounds of things she'll just have a make do with whatever she can get! Link to comment
DD1903
SOTR, there is a jury's inn about 5 minutes walk from central station now, which would allow her to get back and forward quite easily. Link to comment
gla5gowdon
Yea, a quick scan for a hotel during 23rd-3rd returns everything sold out apart from a few things coming it at around £5k for that time. Search results showing Greenock, Dunblane Hydro (probs best bang for buck at the moment, 50 mins on train), Stirling, Falkirk or Livingston. Mobbed. Maybe MT would put her up, he's neighbourly. Clydeside_Sheep
How long is the guest staying for? Is luxury or value the priority? My advice would be: Hockey Center options: The national hockey centre is at Glasgow Green essentially. For this location, from memory, nearby we have (all city centre / merchant city): Mainstream hotels: Jurys Inn (20 mins walk) http://www.jurysinns.com/hotels/glasgowHoliday Inn Express (10 mins walk) http://www.expressglasgow.co.uk/ Cheaper option: Euro-hostel (20 mins walk) http://www.euro-hostels.co.uk/Glasgow Ive never stayed myself, but Ive heard of many Dandies use the Euro-hostel when visiting Glasgow for gigs or a weekend away, so it must be at least OK (given the exacting standards of Aberdonians lol). St Enochs and Bridge Street Underground stations are only 15 - 20 minutes walk from the Hockey Centre. Accordingly, the person could stay somewhere along the Underground route. I would recommend Garnethill (the district where I live, no less) - there are many B&Bs and low cost hotels, as well as higher end options. It is near Underground stations (George X and Cowcaddens) and also provides easy walking access to both city centre and west end. Check here for various options in this area, prices £24 - £100 per night: http://www.bedbreakfast-hotels.co.uk/glasgow_city/garnethill_hotels.html Staying on the Underground route would also mean the west end is also an option but is more remote from the Hockey Centre and would likely be more expensive. In Tradeston (just south of the clyde) there is a travel lodge and ibis budget hotel. These are a slightly further walk than the city centre options, but underground trains and buses can be caught from near here. These hotels are near the Springfield Quay entertainment zone and city centre, but otherwise the area is full of huns, due to its proximity to Mordor. http://www.travelodge.co.uk/hotels/book/glasgow-hotels (paisley road or city centre) http://www.ibis.com/gb/hotel-3503-ibis-budget-glasgow-previously-etap-hotel/index.shtml You can also hire flats or "apartments" but I discounted these are probably not cost effective (might be wrong but I think they are pricey). Athletes village: I would not recommend anyone stay in this area for the games, least of all a visitor to the city. Its alright, but I am wondering if it will be a scenario where just one or two wrong turns from the pleasant athletes village will suddenly bring the visitor right into the guts of Bridgeton, or the less salubrious parts of London Road etc. Bridgeton is full of chock-full of huns pubs - an especially bitter variety - and sometimes the paving stones can be seen painted red-white-blue (the council require a police escort to clean this off). The HQ of the Orange Order is in Bridgeton. Accordingly, with the presence of these kind of establishments, there can be unsavoury characters lurking around at all times of the day. The places named above are reasonably close for travelling to the village too, (bus or train), its no further from the City Centre than is Sellick Park. I think additional, games specific transport is being put on to get people from the city centre to the east end locations. In this case, it may be better to take Bripods advice and stay somewhere along the Argyll line - inc city centre - which is a good shout. Ultimately regardless of what venue, for visitors I would say the City Centre and immediately around it is the best bet, for all of convenience, access to other amenities, safety and ease of getting about. Hope this helps, by all means ask any more Qs. Link to comment
