Injuries

An ex player told me that the whole fitness / physio / recovery process at Pittodrie was stuck in the 80's. He had sampled the best that is on offer at a higher level and although The Dons could not afford that sort of treatments it left a lot to be desired. It was a main stumbling block in attracting new players, the lack of decent recovery facilities and processes.

Although nobody ever seems to be injured when a team is winning

Still amazes me that some on here dismissed such a key factor in the modern game.

"we didnt need state of the art facilities in the 80's"

"we used to train on the beach"

Its not the facilities that matter IMO stoney, even though we still need them.

Its the way the players are being looked after in general. Not going to claim I know much about sports science but from what I've gathered it looks at things like having too many muscles in one part of the body compared to another and balances your body out with the right types of exercise for you rather than a one size fits all.

That will be why we dont have so many hamstring injuries. Our players will be doing the right exercises, warm ups and warm downs to make sure those areas are protected.

I'd say this was completely down to the new sports science we're putting in place.

It's no surprise that the amount of hamstring injuries is almost non existent compared with last season...with The GWT's National Service work outs and knowledge of the modern game, I'm amazed we were able to field a fit 11 each week...it's high time the auld chancer was kicked the length of King Street and put on the next train South.

Couldn't agree more, the interview with him on Alba was very enlightening, esp regarding Pawlett.

Got a link to that? Pawlett is definitely, by a country mile, the most to benefit out of Graham Kirk. For a player to be seemingly made of glass before this season, there has been a rapid turnaround. He visibily looks like he has worked hard and strengthened up a bit, now jostling and shielding the ball rather than falling to the ground.

Hmmm.

Flood. Considine, Robson, Robertson and Jack have all been out injured for several games this season.

Maybe not all at once for a change and maybe we just have a stronger squad so have been able to handle it better?

Aye, I see what you're saying and I do agree with us having a stronger squad but we have to look at the context of that injuries before dismissing the importance of McInnes's, Docherty's and Kirk's work in fitness and conditioning. Injuries such as Flood's (hamstring) can be worked on with certain rehabilitation techniques, certain stretches when recovered etc. Injuries such as Jack's can't be helped as it was a result of a bad tackle. No money in the world will allow you to be able to compensate for injuries from tackles. Can't quite remember what Considine and Robson was injured with. Anderson is another example of an injury prone player who has benefitted enormously.

I think fitness and conditioning and rehabilitation from injuries is one area (among many) that we have been below par and to a certain extent, overlooked. Only now, with the re-emergence of Pawlett and generally, the whole squads fitness are we reaping the benefits of McInne's attention to detail in this area.

It was as one of the half time interviews during the Motherwell game, its on Red TV too.

He talks about how Pawlett's biggest issue was the strength of his core and how he saw him as a project when Pawlett was on loanat St Johnstone, then when he came back they kept in touch and he continued to work with Pawlett.
