donjb
What are the best albums you've heard so far this year? So far I'm liking the following: Temples - Sun Structures Boy & Bear - Harlequin Dream The New Mendicants - In to the Lime Link to comment
Ke1t
Best Album I've heard this year is Floodland by The Sisters of Mercy. Fill yer boots on the entire album. When that guitar kicks in over the drums you'll be hooked like a little fish on a big hook full of delicious worms. 1 Link to comment
NorthernLights24
Nothing new has taken my fancy yet this year but the new Cynic album is out tomorrow. There are a few other albums I'm looking forward to this year like In Flames and maybe, just maybe Tool. Link to comment
tutankamun
This thread could be useful for me because I've reached an age where I've stopped actively seeking out new music. I'm obviously not against new music per se, I just can't be arsed anymore. I've got my Spotify playlists and that seems to do me these days, a bit depressing really. The thing is, a lot of my younger nephews are listening to the same music as I did at their age. Speaking with them, they say it's because "music is shite these days". Link to comment
dave_min
I had High Hopes for High Hopes, but predictably 2 songs aside its shiiiiiiiittttteeeeeee Link to comment
amancalledbuck
Is the Temples een nae a bittie derivative? Psych by numbers? Link to comment

I tend to use Spotify to discover bands I've not heard before. Discover option on it can be quite useful. Some of apps like The Guardian, Rolling Stone and Pitchfork are also good on it. Some good tracks would come up on that, including tunes I hadn't heard in years. Unfortunately playing Spotify through Sonos doesn't gave that option. I've just discovered the playlists published online which are not bad. Haven't used this 'Discover' option though, will give it a go. Link to comment
RDU_64
Don't really listen to much new music and got an i-pod for Christmas so thought I would make proper use of it instead of listening to the same music over and over again. Downloaded Slash's album which is pretty good and Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds which I'm really impressed with. Like a lot of their music. Also bought The Rolling Stones, live in Hyde Park as I was there (not in 1969!). Link to comment
amancalledbuck
I've been filling loads of gaps in my collection, lately. Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Pharoah Sanders, Leonard Cohen, Lou Reed, Sly StoneJohnny Cash, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Jimi Hendrix, some more Dylan, some Blues. The best new-ish thing I've heard is Music From The Monks Kitchen.A bit folky, hazy, quite Scouse sounding - The Coral/Strands/Shack. Link to comment
Jonty
Temples album is decent. Bought "Dream River" by Bill Callahan last week, tremendous. New Bombay bc album any good? Link to comment

The Discover section basically recommends bands based on the music you already listen to. Link to comment
donjb
The Family Rain - Under The Volcano - stumbled across it, nae bad. THE RIFLES - NONE THE WISER - just listen to it eh I listened to The Family Rain album earlier, pretty decent. The Rifles one is on my list to listen to. Link to comment
Quagmire
If any of you use torrents then search "various rock/indie playlist", there's generally a new release each month that includes 100+ new singles from up-and-coming to famous bands. I've made some decent finds over the last year using it. Link to comment

Nelly
Nae strictly a 2014 album (Dec 2013) but Cold Crows Dead's debut album 'I fear a new world' is well worth a listen. It's an X-certs side project but I think its even better than anything the X-certs have done to date. Link to comment
