Clydeside_Sheep
(sorry if this has been discussed before, I haven't seen it though) My home town club, the lowly Albion Rovers, experimented with a "pay what you can" deal for fans in January. Fans could choose their own admission fee, with the minimum to get in £1. (Usually its £10 for an adult). This was for a January game v Montrose. They compared the days takings to the last time they had played Montrose in August. The results: Crowd: +125% increase (crowd was 718)Gate receipts: +160% increaseCafe / Shop etc taking: +165% increase Not bad eh? Seems to have been a roaring success. Do you think this kind of thing will become more common? Do you think the bigger Scots teams would ever consider such a scheme, or do you think its employment / success will be limited to the wee teams? See link for more info: http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/25706582 There's a cracking pic of the stand in the link (they only have one stand). When I was very, very, young, I have a vague memory of my grandfather taking me to a game there and I can remember being in that stand. Fucks know who they were playing, or what the score was, I only remember being with my granddad. I was that young that I was barely interested in the game, tbh. (This venture may have been an effort to prevent my father taking me to snake mountain, or other place of ill repute - well done grandpa!). And I remember - years later - getting onto the pitch when I was in the cubs; they took us up there and we were allowed to train on the pitch one midweek evening. Then - as a surprise - the reserve keeper appeared and we got to take penalties against him. I remember being insulted that it was the reserve keeper they sent. My arrogance was ill founded though, as it turned out my shots were so feeble that the ball would barely reach the goal, let alone trouble the keeper. After he casually saved my effort (by placing his foot on top of the trundling ball) I remember being upset and thinking "what kind of prick would save a wee boys penalty?". Link to comment
zander
Would work for one game the novelty factor would soon wear off and folk would go back to watching Soccer saturday getting ready for the EPL supper time game.We should perhaps try it in a cup match vs a lower league team if we were ever going to do it. StandFree1982
Say the average paid was £10 (i suspect it's much less) then we'd still need to take in about 20k to get close to what we'd make on a normal home game.(i'm going on 10k @ £22 average ticket price) As Zander says, this would be fine against a lower league side. We should perhaps try it in a cup match vs a lower league team if we were ever going to do it. That's a good call l actually, it could well be the perception of a good deal - rather than the actual good deal itself - which stimulated folk to come along. Thus they could get bored of it. I wonder why some of the smaller clubs in the top flight don't try it occasionally? They get crap attendances (bar when sellick come, when they can give them all the allocation) and so why give it a go? It would be a good thing for large families / unemployed etc. Link to comment
Holyjoe
Cliftonhill is a fantastic little ground.. well stand really, the rest of it is out of use because it's so decrepit. Saw they've got plans to redevelop the unused terrace and also build behind one of the goals too to increase the capacity. Was disappointed to see them take their cup games against Rangers and Motherwell to neutral venues as that was little more than an attempt to cash in on the 'big' draws, but then if the money from that and the Scottish Cup semi-final they will hopefully be playing in this April helps the club improve the ground then it's fine by me. 1 Link to comment
Henry
I see Albion Rovers are extending the pay what you can offer to their season tickets next year (£10 minimum charge). http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/may/08/albion-rovers-pay-what-you-can-season-ticket?CMP=EMCFTBEML853 Yes Bluto, it's from the Guardian. fine-n-dandy
Stewartie Milne is doing something similar to pay what you can. He's raised the prices as a whole but you can always pay more if you like/can. I think he's misunderstood the concept Link to comment
dj_bollocks
I was hoping it might be pay with a can... With everything from a can of wife beater to those cans of beans with the wee willy winkie sausages in them... but apparently they want money and not a meal... Pffft... Link to comment

RowieMan
Good idea, might be worth doing if we have a home pre-season friendly agaisnt a side like copenhagen or ajax (any well known european club), would generate a bit of interest ahead of the new season. Bring your ticket into the club shop within the next week and get £5 off a new shirt etc. somebody in the marketing dept reading this will be getting moist! Link to comment
Dynamo
Yeah a pre season friendly at home is a good shout.Club will never do it for a league/cup game. It's more suited to the small clubs trying to increase profile with 500 or so regular punters. Link to comment

The top clubs probably aren't that excitied about a trip to aberdeen so lets not get carried away and think we can bring over Real Madrid etc. Maybe a game against Twente that was "pay what you can" would have attracted more fans, and you might have left at half time thinking you;d had value for your £3! . Would that ha e been the last time we spent money on a player. Him or the formidable talent that was tommy wright. Anyway, my point is would a similar offer work this time cash now instead of him leaving for nowt. Let's all chip in and get the first hat sponsored player. Link to comment

Tord31
we paid a nominal transfer fee for Shankland. Otherwise dont think McGhee, Brown or McInnes have spent transfer fees Be an idea for us to do pay what you can for Clangers testimonial. Cant think of anyone that would pay normal entrance fee 1 Link to comment

Pudgie
I hope it works as inverness crowds are terribleAs are Hamilton's. I was watching the highlights of us against Dundee at Dens and the place was packed. It's so disappointing to see the top teams fanbases haven't grown to match the level the teams are playing at. Ross County I can understand but there's some very poor numbers crop up every week at Hamilton and Inverness and even Motherwell when they were on a rather good run. Link to comment

Ross County I can understand but there's some very poor numbers crop up every week at Hamilton and Inverness and even Motherwell when they were on a rather good run. I know what you mean. Sadly the reason for the poor crowds at two of the three you mentioned is because the teams are based in Lanarkshire and almost everyone supports you know who. Catholics one side proddies the other simple as that. My brother went to school in Hamilton and said in his class there was only one accies fan. Unfortunately it will never change, well if the Huns died properly it might but you know what I mean. As for Inverness not sure why their crowds are so shit maybe still grievances over the merger and people just refuse to go. Link to comment

Henry
Not quite pay what you can, but Hamilton are charging 10p entry on Saturday against Inverness. Saturday’s match against Inverness CT at New Douglas Park on Saturday 24th of January marks Frankie McAvoy’s last game as an “Academical"Both he and Alex Neil have given us wonderful service in their time at the Club, both of them served us for 10 years, and of course Alex wore the number 10 jersey with distinctionAs a mark of the esteem we hold them in, we have designated Saturday’s game as a tribute to these significant 10’s and will make the admission charge for all spectators, home or away, just 10p (Ten Pence). We look forward to welcoming all our loyal supporters, and perhaps some new ones, to send Frankie, (and Alex), off with the acclaim they deserve.
