I'm not sure how you can prosecute Aberdeen fans for mentioning a factual case of paedophilia.

 

...incidentally, how come it's Aberdeen fans who are "twisted and vile" when it was the Celtic lad who was fucking kids?

 

Is The 'Super Soaraway' Sun actually taking the position that it's vile to hold paedophiles accountable?

 

Does The Sun still have 16 year old girls with their tits out on page three for old men to wank over during their lunch break?

Alan Brazil came out of his closet. Celtic boys were serially sexually abused. Big Jock knew about this, allegedly. Priests have been serially sexually abusing boys for decades, if not centuries.

 

Referring to facts may offend some people, particularly a victim and the timing of the referring may be in poor taste, even if it was intended in humour. That's the politically correct way of the world these days. Not that any referral could possibly have been made to a known victim. More a scatter gun approach, throw it out there and see who starts greeting.

 

The bonus possibility would be if the referral was directed at an abuser. A long shot, maybe but let's get real, the crime was in the sexual abuse, not talking about it or having a laff about it. Not that it's funny, or at least, not to everyone but it would be a sad day if sick humour was banned.

Ridiculous, I hardly think "paedo chants" are any worse than many of the things chanted at football.

 

Once my mate was at a Massive Attack gig and there were paedo chants at it.

What change of topic? I only wrote two sentences (Im taking the criticism of my being verbose to heart lol) and mentioned paedos in both of them!

I am willing to delete my comment about massive attack, if you feel its muddying-the-waters :)

 

EDIT - wouldnt be surprised if the story about dons fans is just made-up shit stirring. Remember how often we are supposed to have attacked wheelchair bound Rangers (a now defunct team) fans outside Ibrox etc.

Its sad that gullible people allow the media to distort their worldview so much, such that they become such angry individuals.

 

Helpful as ever, here are some comparisons of rates of sexual abuse (% of children who suffer it) in the Catholic Church versus General Society:

 

USA Ireland GB

Catholic Church 0.03% 0.2% N/A

General Society 22-23% N/A 16%

So, while yes the Church has been shown to have had serious failings in dealing with cases of abuse, we can see it is wrong for an observer to suggest that the Church has an especially serious, or unique, problem with abuse.

 

As for the cause of these failings: well, we can easily see how formerly f*cked up general attitudes to paedohpilia were, with the recent news that the UK National Council for Civil Liberties was - including several prominent modern labour MPs - in the 1970s, associated with and advocating for groups who were openly paedophiles (as did the UK gay rights movement, up until the early-mid 1980s).

 

It is easy to see then that the Church is unfairly singled out for criticism here and some people have a very distorted view due to being influenced by the media.

 

I had hoped not to get drawn into defending the Catholic Church in this thread and indeed originally commenedt only to defend the good name of Dons fans and make a joke about massive attack. But erroneous allegations need addressing - fairs fair!

The failings of other sections of society or organisations, doesnt change the fact that the catholic church did not deal effectively with cases of child abuse.

 

Did the media choose to single out the catholic church and ignore other cases? Possibly, it doesn't change thr fact that it happened.

 

I for one am not singling out the catholic church, but it is relevant in this instance due to celtics connection to it whilst other religions are not. But just in case you're wondering I do give other religions the same level of respect as I do to the catholic church.

I think the important part of the debate here, regardless of whether you talk about the Catholic church or otherwise - is that those who are part of a church, are there to support and nurture society, the weak, the vulnerable - not take advantage of it. That priests have 'tampered' with under age boys, is to me, more damning than someone who is from a member of the public but just downright sick and warped.

 

Don't turn this into a debate about 'Cafflicks' though. I'm pretty sure the vast majority of AFC fans would tell you to poke reliigion up yer arse.
