Hi Cow here, as many of you will be aware a Bill introduced by Philip Hollobone, is being debated at Westminister. The gist is that all youngster 16-26 would be forced to serve one year National Service, paid at the minimum wage, including expenses. The second reading of the proposed Bill is due in the next few weeks so it will probably generate more news time.

Leaving this open to Sensible posters like Spam, Kelt. Excellent people like Rumpus, Derek. Terrible posters like Rocket and obvious trolls like DAYTS.

In peacetime the idea of enforced military training strikes me at the very least as unnecessary and at worst a gross infringement of civil liberties. The effective 12 month imprisonment of civilians against their will.

The only reason I can see the government doing something like this would be to reduce the official number of unemployed of working age... a pretty cynical ploy.

Britain has a volunteer army, and in time of peace that's exactly how it should be.

Anyone who wants to be locked up and yelled at by brainless, aggressive pricks for a year of their life should be allowed to sign up, just the way they do now.

At some point I think I want to buy up an Island and declare it an independent Anarchy.

There will be beer and (voluntary) slutties, but possibly no internet.

I've seen your island plans. I don't believe there will be beer or slutties.

Anything that's forced upon someone cannot be good.

You're confusing Kelt Island with Beer and Slutties Island.

You don't want to make that mistake when it comes to buying a ticket...

Print out this reminder slip, and when you go to the airport to buy passage just hand it over to avoid problems later.

Agreed.

Although the youth of today are a feckless lot, with an overdeveloped sense of entitlement. I think that those that have managed 12 consecutive months of unemployment (outwith further education, health issues, etc) may well benefit from NS - provided it is used to teach skils

I'd have no real problem with military service being dished out in lieu of prison sentences for chavs.

If you're acting in an anti-social manner and you would be going to jail anyway then it's probably better to teach them discipline in the military than putting them in with hardened criminals and teaching them new criminally tricks.

Teach them how to strip an engine and they might get a mechanics job when they get out.

Of course they might just go around robbing engines out of people's cars instead.

Any Idea where this would take place? There would be at least 1 million per year subjected to this. Would the burden be spread to local branches (numbers diminishing) or would we be sending then to a 'Super-centre' in the midlands?

Do not think it would do kids any harm as they lack real discipline nowadays (i know i have 3 sons)

As long as it does not involve any front line stuff (that should always be a choice)

but between the ages of 16-26 so what happens to someone who has worked from 16 to 26 (10 years) do they have to do it and will their job be kept for them when they come out

maybe something regional where they do some training every other weekend would be better
