tommo1903
So what we are saying is that Messi was 90 (120) minutes away from being as good as Maradona? Had Argentina won that trophy, he would have pretty much done it alone. He was the stand-out player in that Argentina team and dragged them to the final. Rodriguez & a couple of Germans had a better WC, thats about it.Some mongs of an older generation are too blinded by their heyday, what things were like in their youth, will never see how good Messi is. Same mongs probably think that Happy Mondays are still relevant. Messi - as good as Maradona. 1 Link to comment
daytripping
Maradona was miles better than Messi, it isn't even close. Ronaldo is better than Messi. Link to comment

Bluto10
Agreed. It was a tournament of two halves for little Leo. Link to comment
Bluto10
Maradonas contribution to the 86 WC win is of course vastly overstated mainly cause he scored 4 brilliantly iconic goals. For consistent brilliance at the top end of club football at least messi has by far the greater resume. Diff times of course. Put maradona in the late 00s Barcelona and who knows how good he would have bee. Link to comment

boboisared
IranNigeriaBosnia All group stages, without his goals they'd not have made the knockouts. Messi was however absolutely shite in the knockout stages.Football isn't hypothetical. There is every chance someone else would have scored. Link to comment

Byrne Baby Byrne
He'll definitely come back for the 2018 World Cup. I think it's too hard to judge who was better. Messi is playing in a "super team" at club level. It wasn't possible to go out and buy all the best players for one team when Maradona was playing. Certainly helps Messi score goals when he has lots of quality around him and any other team in the division that dares show a quality player will end up just losing him to Barca as well. Also, in Diego's day it was nae bother at ah to just kick the fuck out of him. Messi is far more protected. Greatest player ever... clearly Eoin Jess. 2 Link to comment
Bluto10
Messis club career over maradonas; clearly. Vice verse for international level obviously. I'd say messi is the better player purely on the goals he scores. 1 Link to comment
