  • In July 2012, Cardiff signed South Korean international Kim Bo-kyung, but when Moody informed Mackay on July 12 that ‘five of the b******s including the player’ were arriving for talks, the reply from Mackay’s phone was: ‘Fkn chinkys.’ A further message says: ‘Fk it. There’s enough dogs in Cardiff for us all to go around.’
  • In reference to the prominent football agent, Phil Smith, a text states: ‘Go on, fat Phil. Nothing like a Jew that sees money slipping through his fingers’. The Israeli club, Maccabi Tel Aviv, are also referred to simply as ‘the Jews’.
  • A football official at another club is referred to as ‘a gay snake’ and ‘the homo’ and someone who is ‘not to be trusted’, while a French player is someone ‘who struck me as an independently minded young homo’.
  • An exchange with a young player who has a female agent makes reference to a sex act and states: ‘I hope she’s looking after your needs,’ the player is then told. ‘I bet you’d love a bounce on her falsies.’
  • On August 16, 2012, a list of players proposed by a French agent is forwarded, stating to Mackay that ‘he needs to rename his agency the All Blacks’. A separate text in reference to a list of French players states: ‘Not many white faces amongst that lot but worth considering.’
  • In a separate exchange a picture entitled ‘Black Monopoly’ is sent, with every square a ‘Go To Jail’ square. Of one African player, it is stated: ‘Doesn’t look like a good cv. And he’s Nigerian.’

Malky Mackay has apologised for sending text messages that were “disrespectful of other cultures” after a day in which the Football Association launched an investigation into allegations of serious misconduct by the former Cardiff manager and former recruitment chief Iain Moody.

However, the League Managers’ Association, which transmitted his apology, risked exacerbating an already fraught situation when it put out a statement defending Mackay, admitting the existence of questionable text messages but claiming that he “was letting off steam to a friend during some friendly text message banter”.
There was immediate and widespread condemnation on Twitter, with the former Reading striker Jason Roberts, a high-profile anti-racism campaigner, saying: “LMA actually wrote this. They are actually being serious! Somebody drafted that … WOW!” Piara Powar, the executive director of the anti-discrimination body FARE, tweeted: “The LMA defending the indefensible. Why would you put out something so utterly ridiculous? Because you haven’t a clue.”
The LMA said in its statement: “In the course of a search by the club in early 2014 of 10,000 private text messages sent to and from another member of staff during Mr Mackay’s employment at Cardiff, in relation to other matters, it emerged that Malky had, it seems, sent a couple of one-line texts that were, with the benefit of hindsight, very regrettable and disrespectful of other cultures.
“These were two text messages sent in private at a time Malky felt under great pressure and when he was letting off steam to a friend during some friendly text message banter. That said, Malky believes he could and should have conducted himself better on these two isolated occasions. If Malky has caused any offence by these two isolated matters he would, however, wish to sincerely apologise.”
It added: “Malky is also very concerned about seriously inaccurate and misleading reports of his alleged involvement in these matters in the media. It has never been alleged that he wrote any homophobic or sexist messages and he has confirmed that he did not do so. Malky looks forward to matters being put straight in due course, following any investigation of this matter.”
A series of alleged racist, homophobic and sexist text messages, as well as information on a number of transfers at the Welsh club, were included in the dossier compiled by the Cardiff owner, Vincent Tan, and the London law firm Mishcon de Reya. Moody has stepped down from his role as Crystal Palace’s sporting director and Mackay’s appointment as manager was shelved by the south London club this week, with Keith Millen remaining in caretaker charge for Saturday’s Premier League match against West Ham.

I like Malky Mackay.

He went to the same High School as me (St Ambrose, Coatbridge).

I once bumped into him in the "how to insult chinks 101" class ;)

(nah hes older than me, so he would be leaving when I started)

I think hes been very hard done by over this. Its clear the texts are jokes, and are in much the same vein as what we post on here. It would be outrageous if anyone was hauled over the coals for a daft post on here.

I really dislike the society we have created, where it is dominated by humourless types ready to take offence, purely to flaunt their imagined moral superiority over others.

Maybe if he had made the comments in polite company,. or in the media, it would be right to hammer him for it - but not for private remarks with a friend. Talk about Orwellian. Privacy is important.

It ridiculous - Suarez can be racist and bite (assault) people repeatedly on the pitch and still keep playing - even gets a heros welcome at Barcalona. Yet Malky makes some private jokes and gets both barrels.

I hope this blows over as he is a good young manager.

He shouldn't be sending the text using a company mobile. Daft as fuck.

Harry Redknapp has come out in defence of Malky Mackay, who apologised on Thursday for sending text messages that were “disrespectful of other cultures” following a day in which the FA launched an investigation into allegations of serious misconduct by the former Cardiff City manager and the technical director, Iain Moody.

Redknapp is adamant that this episode should not finish Mackay’s career. The Queens Park Rangers manager firmly believes he should be given a second chance. “I’m not condoning what he’s done because it’s wrong if he’s done what has been alleged. But he’s not a bad person, he’s a fantastic lad. Show me someone who has never made a mistake in their life and I’ll show you a liar. It happens,” Redknapp said.
“He’s not murdered anyone, he’s not a rapist or a paedophile. He’s made a big mistake. It shouldn’t finish his life or his football career. It’s going to take time for him to get back into the game. People get second chances in life who have committed bad crimes. Why shouldn’t he? He’s made a mistake but we’re not going to hang him for it are we? Given time his life has to go on. Hopefully he’ll learn from the silly mistakes he’s made.
“Lots of people do that silly tweeting. I’m lucky, I don’t send text messages too often. I do get text messages from people with sick jokes on when something terrible has happened. I don’t read them, they make me ill. But it does happen and I’m sure I’m not the only person who gets them. He’s a good person beneath all that and I hope he comes back. I can’t imagine how he must be suffering for the big mistake he’s made.
“What they’ve done is obviously not right but Malky Mackay is a fantastic lad, a great fella. A family man, a real football man.
“He’s made a big mistake. People make mistakes in life. We can all come out and be critical. I hear people on the radio. They’ve probably made mistakes but suddenly everyone is an angel. It shouldn’t finish his life should it. He’s a young man and a top manager. I feel really sad and sorry for what he’s done. I’m sure no one is suffering like him and his family are today.”
And Redknapp didn’t seem to think there was a coincidence in the messages emerging from Cardiff just before Mackay was set to take the manager’s job at Crystal Palace. “Obviously someone is after him, ain’t they? They are certainly not giving up that’s for sure.”
