Any hatters planning to go to Russia 2018 should have a wee read of this, written by a colleague of mine.

 

"The distances between the different host cities are immense, for example high speed train travel only exists between Saint Petersburg and Moscow; roads and highways are often in a precarious state; while internal flights are only recommended for travellers of an adventurous disposition. Fans and media would need to budget days rather than hours to make the 1500 mile journey by land from Russia’s Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad to the edge of Asia in Yekaterinburg."

For what it's worth, I reckon the controversy surrounding the absolute disgrace of Qatar 2022 has overshadowed the inevitably huge problems Russia will have hosting the 2018 edition. Some very dodgy (and clearly political) venue choices (Sochi, Kaliningrad) although thankfully stopped short of Vladivostok.

 

Two or three of the venues are not too far from me so already contemplating a trip.
