Darren Young + Albion Rovers

Recommended Posts

Congrats to Darren Young and his Albion Rovers side for romping scottish league 2 (I meant to post this before now).

Rovers were the team nearest where I grew up (and no, I wont go and watch them instead lol) so I am glad to see them do well. Even moreso given they have been guided to this success by a former Dandy.

No-one will ever sing about the Aberdeen sides which featured the "Dung Brothers", but I wonder if Darren has finally found his vocation as a manager?

What do you think, are we seeing a future Dons boss in the making?

In any case, I hope his success with Rovers continues. Esp if they can pump wannabe-huns and hated local rivals Airdrie a few times!

Coatbridge is a decent sized town, and so there is a potential support there, but its suffers from the same problem all lanarkshire towns do - i.e glory-hunting folk going in droves to the tattie dome or Mordor (mostly the tattie dome in Coatbridges case).

(I cant really talk, as - back in the early 80s - I also chose my team on the transparent basis of glory-hunting, but at least I chose a respectable team ;) And have since proved myself by sitting through approx 20 years of shite - 20 years)

However, Rovers are innovative (eg the 'pay what you can' ticket scheme) and so they might be able to tempt some folk along. Teams like that should do what the national team do - use free tickets to school kids as a means of building a crowd.

Let school kids in free for a generation or two and you will surely start to see your paying adult attendance rise (hell, we should do it too).

I like their stadium.

Its a hovel. Folk used to gather on the hills to the north of it, where they could see in for free - lousy tinkers! The Polis used to come to chase them away. Think they have now addressed that via blocking the view with billboards / fencing.

I can remember being in the ground twice - once when (with either the cubs or scouts) we got to visit and take penalties against their reserve keeper. Mine was a limp-wristed trundler which was right at the keeper. He could have popped out, done his shopping at ASDA, had a fag, then came back and still saved it.

I mind my grandfather taking me to a game there too, when I was very young - a nice memory, God rest him :)

He was definitely the better player here. Must have gone hoora downhill as Derek Young somehow returned while Darren played 3rd division football at the same time

Fairly sure Deek should have been playing third division football at the same time as well. Remember him having a surprisingly decent return season and from then on it just being hard work and an "I'll play anywhere" ethos that kept him here.

If memory serves, he wasn't getting a game at Partick, who were in the second division at that point... Jimmy brought him back because he was 'good to have about the place'!

Young played in the First Division with Partick Thistle last season
Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood is delighted to be bringing Derek Young back to the club on a two-year deal.

"He is an absolute gem, a great lad to work with, everybody at the club knows him and he is very popular," Calderwood told the Press & Journal.

"The fact we are able to bring someone of Derek's quality with the budget restraints we have is very pleasing.

"He is very versatile and is another player who will give you everything he has got."
