Euro 2016 Playoffs

Recommended Posts

In the past i would have cheered for almost anyone to beat the paddys, that "football rivalry" for me went out the window after i stopped following england 10 year ago.

Hope they get through, not a big fan of countries like bosnia and serbia anyway.

Have a feeling it could be a high scoring 2 - 2 draw though, unfortunately putting ireland out.

Hopefully this finally puts to bed the ridiculous notion that we're too small/don't have the players to qualify for a finals series.

Plenty other small nations, with very limited player pools, have qualified for these Euros.

It's totally unacceptable that we won't be in France and it's just laughable that Strachan has been rewarded for this abject failure.

Why is it a acceptable that we aren't there?

We aren't better than Germany. And we don't have a Lewandowski.

So we were always in a fight with the RoI for playoff place.

It's hard to argue that we a superior side to them.

But certainly the mgr wasn't able to inspire us to play above our level.

As I said elsewhere (Gordon Strachan thread) there has been a very fine line between success and failure here. While I share your disgust at yet another failure to qualify, the cold hard fact is that we punched our weight with the players we have, in a VERY tight group. We are roughly at the level of RofI and Poland (worth noting we were UNBEATEN against them both in 4 games) and so the group would always be tight and punish any mistakes, as we found to our cost in Tbilisi.

The situation was not helped by Eire taking an incredible 4 points from the world champions, but ultimately, it came down to our blunder in ONE GAME. If not for that one dreadful result in Georgia, in a repeat of 2007's scenario, we would have comfortably made the play-offs and, very probably, have beaten Bosnia and qualified. What would people be saying about the manager then? Would the (albeit steady and incremental) improvements made under him compared to the last decade and a bit have been lauded, rather than discarded? Would people be calling for a change based on his mediocrity, or would the euphoria of qualification for the first time since 1998 have masked these shortcomings?

Look, I'm not happy with his team selections either (and Craig Brown's new article on young players is laughable and insulting, considering he was as guilty as Strachan and the SFA of not giving youth a chance) but who else can come in and do a better job? If someone shows me a better (realistic) candidate then I'll back calls for his appointment, but until then...
