Top 5 Best/worst Afc Managers

Recommended Posts

Had this debate recently at a work's do. Fergie was obviously unanimously voted as the best, but as there was a fairly wide age range the other positions were fiercely contested by names such as Smith, Turnbull and Halliday.

Worst manager for me was McGhee but there seemed to be more vitriol spouted towards Miller.

Top 5:

1. Fergie

2. McInnes

-Cannot another good manager in the flesh in my 26 years. Probably was at some Smith games I can't remember though.

Worst 5:

1. McGhee

2. Miller

3. Paterson

4. Calderwood

5. Aitken

(Revised #4 to Caldo. Think I just blotted him out of my mind).

5. Calderwood (last 1.5 seasons)

Not including useless caretakers like Hegarty & Spiers etc.

In my time of watching the Dons would have to say McInnes is the best so far.

The worst is a hotly contested spot, obviously there was Paterson - an "alcoholic gambling bastard" as I heard one kid call him when I worked with him. Was very hard not to laugh at the time. Not the worst though IMO. The club were going through massive cost cutting exercises long before some of our peers, hence how shite we were.

Calderwood gets an honourable mention but can't be considered worst, given league positions over his tenure but his cup performances were a major embarrassment to the club. I will say that it would have been interesting (in a masochist kind of way) to see how he would have fared in McGhee's season given the state of the squad that summer...

Alex Miller - Generally considered a joke but can't really remember much about him.

McGhee is the worst hands down. 9-0....1-5 in Europe....we were touch and go re going down if he stayed. An arrogant prick at that.

Best

1. Fergie

2. McInnes

2. Alex Smith and Jocky Scott (Co-Managers)

3. Willie Miller

4. Alex Smith (on his own, after the magic 'tache went to Dunfermline)

Worst

With the exception of McInnes mentioned above, (and JC to a degree), all managers ot Aberdeen FC since WIllie Miller have been pish. I refer you to our trophy record over 20 years till Deekes arrival.

Special mention to Alex Miller for being particularly hopeless. I struggle to rank the others, at least Skovdahl had a comedic element to his tenure.

Sacking Willie Miller was a knee-jerk error we took ages to recover from.

Ebbe was the most disappointing for me (I'm 34 btw).

When I read what he'd done with Brondby I thought he'd take us to the next level for sure - little did I know it could well have been division 1.

Thank you Brockville!

I can still recall two back-page headlines (albeit from the Record) after we were thumped by Celtic;

One was 'What's he Dane to deserve it?' and the other, in reference to our keeper at that time 'Breach of the Preace'.

Pelle would be my number 2 in terms of disappointment. Seeing what he'd done at Calley gave me hope but alas it was in vain.

I remember wanting Hegarty to get the job permanently.

Very animated on the touchline and always seemed to have lost his voice due to non stop encouragement and direction.

He was a good guy doing the best he could with the players at his disposal.

Fair enough he got us to two cup finals, finished bottom of the league in his first season and had inherited a team of 'challenging' players (i am trying to be polite here) bar Eoin Jess from Alex Miller/Paul Hegarty, his defeatist and carefree attitude turned our club into a laughing stock.

Is Craig Brown worth a mention on the worst list?

Absolutely no chance. The man's a God. Thank fuck he came to Aberdeen when he did as we would have been playing lower league football by now if he hadn't.

Just remember the fitba being boring as hell. There were only so many 0-0, 1-0, 1-1 games that a lad in his teens could take before finding something more fun to do on a Saturday afternoon. His signings were pretty gash too.

Charlie Nicholas and Peter Nicholas were great signings by Ian Porterfield. However Gary Hackett bar his performance at Parkhead and Tom Jones.......
