Afc Transfers - Best And Worst Value For Money

Recommended Posts

Of all the players we have paid money for, who did we get the most value for money from, and of course the worst?

Most - Possibly Duncan Shearer. A bargain for £250k considering the goals he scored for us.

Worst - Paul Bernard. It could be argued that folk like Tommy Wright were far worse, however did Bernard give us £900k more value than Wright? Not a chance

We paid £550k for Shearer. Still great value though, but his goals regrettably only won us one trophy and we got nothing when he left our having signed him when he was only a couple of months short of his 30th birthday. I often wonder what we might be talking about now had Willie Miller instead been successful in his pursuit of John Robertson for whom Hearts had been holding out for over £1m.

Paul Bernard was an excellent footballer who had atrocious difficulties with injuries. Transfer fee was deliberately inflated to £1m for PR reasons, we didn't pay Oldham £1m for him, it was closer to £850k plus signing-on and agency fees. He at least contributed to us winning a trophy

Most value for money for someone over all time for us would likely still have to be Steve Archibald. Bought from Clyde for pennies, made an enormous contribution to our first Premier League title and then sold on to Spurs for a fortune. One of only a very select few players to have moved on to bigger and better things on leaving Aberdeen.

Worst

Probably Brian O'Neill for worst as has been said. 800k for him. Definitely Aitken doing sellick a favour. Rather than the shock among our support, the utter glee from the sellick fans was what really told the story of that transfer.

I know Bernard was injury plagued, but whatever the reason he still represented a poor return for the money imo.

We also signed Nigel Pepper for ~300k if memory serves.

Best

How about Paul Mason for 400k?

In no sense was Paul Bernard a disaster, and to lump him in with some of the other jokers mentioned on this thread is a bit of a disgrace.

He was an extremely good holding midfielder who wasn't afraid to mix it, and who when fit and on his day was one of the best midfielders playing in Scotland at the time. Both he and the club were desperately unlucky with all the injuries he suffered.

Surprised no-one has yet mentioned Bisco in terms of good value... picked him up on a free did we not?

I tend to agree. I've said this numerous times during the summer when this sort of thing normally crops up.

Everyone seems to remember him the wrong way imo.

Was Snelders not about 300k, in todays money that would be about 300k
