I want to rip windows out of the missus's laptop and replace it with something else, open source.

Been doing the google and Linux looks like the only real option.

There does look to be some Android options now but I'm not that up to date with pc's and how they work.

Anyone got any suggestions? Is there a Android OS that can completely replace windows or is it just an add on?

She just uses it for pissing about online. I was hoping you could get a full Android OS for laptops now, you get word, excel etc all free with most new android devices, thought you might get them with an Android laptop OS if there was such a thing.

The copy of windows on it is a dodgy one, the laptop fucked up a while ago and when I rebooted it the key for windows didnt work so I got a CD from a mate but that key had expired as well. I dont want to be downloading shite that will fuck the laptop just to crack the copy of Windows so open source is probably the best option.

Pissing about online, then anything will do spam min.

You could also probably do away with the laptop altogether and us a tablet/phone instead

Picked up one of them, got the Galaxy 2. Its OK but tablets are a little restrictive when it comes to some websites. I'm sure there would be ways round that but I cant be arsed learning how to and then teaching it 8 times...

Is it just Windows you don't like?

My laptop (5 years + old Sony Vaio) has been struggling for ages until I finally had a proper look at it, wiped the system, cleaned the fan and installed the new Windows, installed Avira anti-virus, got a MS Office 2010 Product Key off Google and it works like brand new. The browser is now MS Edge and it works a treat, I'm sure Chrome was partly responsible for my troubles.

My bird now uses it everyday for updating her cv, spreadsheets and general browsing and have heard nothing but praise.

Bit excessive updating your CV every day is it not?

Chrome is very troublesome. Best to stay clear of that so a wise move there Pash.

What do you think cleaning the fan did in relation to the other stuff? Surely the clean wipe and install was the main event. :dontknow:

Its paying £100 for something I will never use and she'll not use to anywhere near the value of the £100 that needs paid out. Thats why I started looking at open source OS.

The laptop is only a couple of years old, its an HP with an i5 processor so if I get it running properly it'll last a good few years. If you know of anywhere ti get a window's product key that isnt going to put a shitload of trojans and viruses onto the laptop that would probably do me fine.

It was overheating like mad as the fan was clarted in shite. I would say that was one of the main improvements actually. So there!

What are you paying £100 for Spam? You can download the latest Windows for free?

Why replace the existing OS at all? Or is it not valid?

If you're set on opensource then a Linux distro is the way to go. If you really want to have an android OS, you could use an emulator like bluestacks or run a VM.

I wiped it a few months ago but the product key on the sticker didnt work. Had to use another one from a mate and now every time its switched on its saying its a pirate copy. Fucking annoying considering the key that is on the sticker underneath it came with it new.

Is distro the one that comes with almost everything? Been looking at Linux but there's so many option I'm not sure which one to go for.

Distro is short for distribution. You might want to look into Ubuntu, it's got a Windows feel to it. Essentially any distro you go for though will mean you'll need to spend a bit of time learning how to use it properly, applications work differently on Linux than they do on Windows. You'll also need to make sure that your hardware is going to work with whatever you opt for - Linux can be a bit of a cunt.

Chrome OS is good, but everything is online. I.E. you have to use Google Docs or Office Online instead of installing the Office software.

Is that easy to put on?Does it get rid of Windows or run alongside it?

She's all googled up from the tablet, might be a good option to have everything tied together without having to explain too much.

The product key might be for a different version of windows?

You can buy an OEM Windows 7 from amazon for 35 quid.

No idea. Its for windows 7 and thats what I put back on it.

I havent had to do anything technical with a pc for years. Moved to a mac 10+ years ago so the last time I had to do anything more than switch on a pc was 2000

You normally have a recovery partition on the laptop hard drive with the operating system ready to go without the need of a disc. Did you try to do a clean install from the recovery partition?

Google the make and model recovery options and you should get instructions. Normally you tap F2 or F8 as the machine is booting up.
