Last touch (in our team) prior to goal scorer have been getting awarded assists (Burns & McGinn both credited with 'weak ones' ) but that is the rules we are playing

Fouled for penalty/free kick which results in next kick of ball from said set piece being a goal is unquestionably a justifiable assists.

 

How you can argue that winning a free kick isn't an assist just because the free kick was spectacular or from distance is just strange.

 

We have a good number of players that will win us free kicks that could result in goals. this is very important to our game. Even more so now that we actually have a decent set piece taker.

Had Hayes not won a free kick Maddison wouldn't have scored because otherwise Maddison was pretty nonexistent in the game.

Hayes was crucial for Maddisons goal, just as anyone would be when he scores a free kick from closer range or less spectacularly

 

Distance of free kick is basically irrelevant to justifying whether it's an assist or not.

That can be argued that whoever wins the corner gets it but more often than not the ref bottles it & 'sees' a foul on keeper/push or something in the box. Robson corner goal aside

Like I say, there are at least two far more questionable assists that have been credited. Burns for Maddison v Dundee & McGinn for Rooney v Celtic but they got them & that's fair enough.

 

Hayes assist is basically unquestionable as had he not won a free kick, Maddison wouldn't have had a sniff at goal.
