Donmacca
So the Chinese and Russian's are practicing mass evacuations of cities in the event of a nuclear attack. Russia and America taking sides in Syria, blowing up hospitals and aid convoys and blaming each other in a tit for tat game. North Korea practicing launching missiles at Japan. US accusing Putin of spiking American diplomats drinks with date rape drugs. Could WW3 be about to kick off? A cold war 2? Or is it all just a load off shite. Personally think it's all being hyped up beyond belief and the worst it'll be is a 2nd cold war. Link to comment

E-P-K
The Yanks and Russia are already in a proxy war in Syria The ruskies have already threatened to shoot down the yanks planes and drones - which will probably happen at some point Bring it on I say Blow the world to smithereens. Be limited action until after the yank elections, if and when Clinton wins, then there will be serious escalation in Syria with the yanks attacking the Syrian armed forces, whether Putin has the balls to shoot down an American plane only time will tell. Agree re the naval base, but the Assad regime itself is useful to the Russians too. Syria under Bashar Assad (and his father before him) has been a long-time client state to the Russia / USSR. They buy weapons (likely other technologies and services too) and can be relied upon as a friend in the region. A lot of Arab states once were Russian clients, but most have now been realigned to be US-facing, often by force or via being bought over (Iraq & Egypt are good examples). Link to comment

Clydeside_Sheep
While Putin does not stand for any shit, I don't think he would want to be remembered as the person who started WW3. Putin is the one calling the tune, its up to the West to choose if they will dance or not. So far they have shyly remained on the edge of the dancefloor. In recent years Russian has (for example) annexed South Ossetia and parts of Ukraine. Now in recent days he has put Iksander missile systems in range of Berlin, claiminng its part of an exercise, and it has come out he is thinking of reactivating military bases in both Cuba and Vietnam. Beyond minor face saving moves, there has been no real response from anyone on these things, so increasingly the pattern seems to be Putin does what he wants and everyone else has to suck it up. Like any good wido, he is becoming ever bolder - he does something small and if theres no come back, then he will push it a bit more, and so on. The West has grown soft and effeminate since the end of the cold war, (using tech-heavy armies to beat on hopeless arab nations hardly counts for anything), whereas Russia is the same old Russia, having got its act together following the collapse of the communist regime and then poor leaders of the standard of the jakey yeltsin. Russias military has been undergoing significant modernisation in recent years, whereas European militaries are pared to the bone and are now designed to fight asymetric wars against illiterate tribesmen, not Russian Armoured Divisions. Russia routinely send bombers into UK airspace and will be discovering we only have anti-aircraft defences to cover the whitehall area of London and often reply on our ageing Tornado jets (or even planes from other Nato countries) to intercept them. Russia has started to take delivery of 2,300 new modern tanks. The British (and other western) Armies big news is that is they now let women into infantry combat units. Its just pathetic. Russia would steamroll Nato in a conventional war (just as the USSR would have done). Only a nuclear war, which no-one wants, would stop them, and the US would only resort to that if America itself was threatened. Trident etc stops Putin using his own nukes as leverage, but I dont think anyone would have the balls to press the button if Putin sent conventional forces streaming towards the english channel. To be honest I only have contempt for western politicians and governments and enjoy the sight of the bold Vlad showing them up for what they are. Imo, western culture and power is in decline, whereas Russia is going places. Link to comment

To be honest I only have contempt for western politicians and governments and enjoy the sight of the bold Vlad showing them up for what they are. Imo, western culture and power is in decline, whereas Russia is going places. ??? As someone else has said, it's Eurofighter Typhoons these days which get sent up to intercept the Russian aircraft. And the QRA ('Quick Reaction Alert') Typhoons which get sent out to shadow the Russians are based at RAF Conningsby, in Lincolnshire, and RAF Lossiemouth. Conningsby runs Southern QRA, whilst Lossie looks after Northern. There are two fully-armed, fully-fuelled Typhoons at each base, ready to get airborne within ten minutes of the alarm going off. The flight crews are on rotational 24hr alert, and chatting with a few of them over the years they're mostly bored off their tits when doing a QRA shift, and are probably weirdly glad that Ivan has started getting frisky again. Gives them something to do! Technically, the Russian aircraft actually don't enter foreign airspace when they're flying their wee wind-up missions, they stick to international airspace albeit very close to the airspace of the territories they want to monitor. Their old tactic during the Cold War was to fly up and over the top of Norway, down towards the UK then down the west coast, taking great care not to enter UK airspace but doubtless all the while with their sophisticated sensors switched on to see what they can pick up. NBD, as far as I'm concerned. We used to do it to them too, and I'd be surprised (to put it mildly) if it's not still going on. Link to comment
