Buying Potential

Recommended Posts

One of the names we have been linked with is Liam Lindsay who looks like he could be joining Oxford but nevertheless I feel this is the type of player we should look to sign more often.

He is only 21 and with a bit of luck could develop into a real asset allowing the club to make a tidy profit in a few years. This is something AFC has never really managed to master in the past and its something that must improve if we are to continue moving forward.

Who else should we be looking at gents?

Apparently all the add ons will take the deal up to over 800k. Would we really be making much of a profit buying a player for that much?

Out of our price range unfortunately.

How the fuck can Oxford afford £800k? Mid table in L1 with average crowd of 6k in a 12.5k capacity stadium.

They published the finances a while back & In their league two (bottom ft league) the league winners received around £4m

Argyle have a great chance of winning the League Two title next week but how much prize money would they receive?

The answer is: none!

There is no extra prize money for winning a championship because all League Two teams receive the same payments from the EFL regardless of finishing position.

Last month I asked those in charge at the EFL how much prize money would a title winning team receive and they confirmed there is no extra prize money for finishing top of League Two and no ladder system operates across all three divisions of the EFL.

So Argyle, should they win the title, will receive the same financial payments as relegated Leyton Orient.

Each League Two club will receive £472,000 as a 'basic award' plus a £430,000 'solidarity payment' from the Premier League.

Basic award across the EFL:

Championship - £2.084m.

League 1 - £677,000.

League 2 - £472,000.

Premier League Solidarity payment across the EFL:

Championship - £4.3m

League 1 - £645,000.

League 2 - £430,000.

A trophy will just have to do!

Ok, so maybe not league two but league one winners benefit more than our top league.

So when you add their league monies to the monies they get once promoted to next league up, that equates to more than you get for SPFL.

Especially when you add in tv money. How else can clubs down there with much smaller gates than some of ours out bid most of the Scottish teams?

SPFL Premiership winners get just under 3 million. According to that EFL breakdown the League One winners get roughly 1.3 million.

Add that to what they get for getting into the championship

They dont get anything for getting into the Championship.

Preston NE is a good example to use to compare income from the Championship v us, similar crowds etc

PNE average attendance - 13K

AFC average attendance - 12.3K

PNE turnover 2016 - 10.6m

AFC turnover 2016 - 13.4m

PNE pre-tax 2016 - £4.4m loss

AFC pre-tax 2016 - 448K profit

The Championship is plugged as the second richest league in the world by the English press, it can actually claim that because you have 5 or 6 teams all receiving parachute payments between £30m and £21m a season for 3 seasons with a club being paid £91m over 3 years. There are 10 clubs all with attendances over 20K and you have almost every club in serious debt to its owners as they chase the premiership gold.

Clubs in the Championship pay more wages because they borrow more, not because they earn millions more in TV money and endorsements.

The decline of @@RAZOR has been spectacular.

Indeed.

Nevertheless a bid for Stevie May would be quite welcome IMHO. Tansey, May and Maloney would be a good trio of signings added to Christie coming back for the season. Just need a couple of defenders. Liam Lindsay would have been a good shout actually. Wouldn't mind us paying a big chunk of the Hayes fee for him.

There's no doubt he's a good player but It'll take time to get him up to speed. By that time he will probably be free to leave.

Risky but potentially great signing if it works out.

Seems we are looking at a permanent deal for him rather than just a loan. £250,000 being the figure quoted.
