For Fecks Sake
and now I'm watching Zulu...One of the best historical movies ever made. Based 'largely' on true events where the British Empire stuck it to a bunch of spear welding savages...... (who had just inflicted the worst modern military defeat to our army only hours previously). One of Claines best performances "Front rank FIRE, Second rank FIRE" Makes you proud it does. Link to comment

One of Claines best performances "Front rank FIRE, Second rank FIRE" Makes you proud it does. Actually facilitated one of the most casually (and entirely unintentional) racist comments from an elderly relative of mine (I was about 13 and actually she probably wasn't that old, maybe 60 or so at the time worryingly) During the bit where all the thousands of Zulus are lined up singing and chanting, she said "Isn't it great how they can get them to do that?" "What do you mean?" I enquired "Well, they're not supposed to be as clever as us are they". Not really her fault, just what she had been taught in school in the first 3rd of the 20th century and never corrected. Not sure what stunned me more though...the fact that she thought Zulus were mentally inferior to "whites" or that she actually seemed to think that in he 1960s a film company would find actual Zulu tribesmen in existence and use them in the scene rather than recruiting a bunch of extras. True story!!! Link to comment

strachanmcgheegoal
films with a bit of technical shit behind them are quite good for a rewatch. The Big Short and Deepwater Horizon being two recent examples (and I fucking hate Wahlberg as a rule). Link to comment

Chewie37
surely this counts for any film you’ve seen before and enjoyed? Not necessarily, most films I’d want to see from the start, Zulu is one of those where you can’t switch it off if you jump in part of the way through One of the best historical movies ever made. Based 'largely' on true events where the British Empire stuck it to a bunch of spear welding savages...... (who had just inflicted the worst modern military defeat to our army only hours previously). One of Claines best performances "Front rank FIRE, Second rank FIRE"Makes you proud it does.Caines first movie as well Not sure what stunned me more though...the fact that she thought Zulus were mentally inferior to "whites" or that she actually seemed to think that in he 1960s a film company would find actual Zulu tribesmen in existence and use them in the scene rather than recruiting a bunch of extras. True story!!!They did actually use the local tribes for the film, Chief Buthelezi played the King (who he was related to) love all the little facts in that film. Zulu Dawn is the movie of the battle where the British got wiped out earlier, that’s a decent film too Link to comment

Great Escape, what a film. There’s loads of little stories in it, so that’s a perfect film for being able to watch part of the way through Link to comment
