There was a theory publicised a few years back that the killer was a high ranking cop and that one of the main detectives leading the investigation was ordered to drop that line of enquiry.  Was also suggested that the killer cop was pensioned off, moved to the Highlands and duly committed other murders. 

One for the Line of Duty squad to get their teeth into.

That's who that annoying arse of a criminologist (David Wilson) insists it was.....indeed he says he'd stake his reputation on it but there is decent enough evidence to prove that he wasn't. He was living in Brighton when 2 of the murders occurred and his ex wife has testified in court that they were on honeymoon together when the second one happened.

Also there was a bite mark on the 3rd one and dental records conclusively proved that Tobin could not have done this. There was semen found on her tights too. Wrongly it has been reported that the DNA wasn't a match for Tobin. In fact it was inconclusive. The way the tights were stored, long before DNA testing became available over 20 years later meant the the specimen had degraded to the point where any test would prove inconclusive.
