Darvel manager been on Clyde 1 phone in. Was talking about their revised ambitions under their chairman....had a 3 year plan to make it into the Lowland League, hopes (almost said expects) it to happen this season a year ahead of schedule.

Was then asked about getting further up into the league system. Again they want to achieve it asap. Said that the current system with the play offs involving HL/LL winners then facing the bottom SFL2 club is going to change in season 2024/25 with the creation of an SFL 3. SFL2 chairman weren't overly enamoured that their side could end up relegated so the new league will give a bit of a buffer to sides currently in SFL2. He says it should become common knowledge about this new league fairly soon. No idea how the SFA/Scottish League will react to him revealing this, you would have thought they'd want to announce any change to the system themselves.

At which point it will be easy to slide in the Hun and Celtic colt teams as part of any merging of Highland and lowland league to form sfl3

The fix is in.

Better off just merging Leagues 1 & 2 (95% part-time teams) into an 18 team league and the bottom two joining a conference with the 16 most ambitious Highland & Lowland League sides. Cease classifying these leagues as being in the Scottish PROFESSIONAL Football League, because part-time, with 500 fans at the game, is not professional.  Sure the conference idea was voted on a couple years back but didn't succeed mostly due to the concerns about the "colt" teams.

The Highland League still has its own micro-economy; players still move around for transfer fees. Fees that Peterhead, Elgin, Cove won't pay because they can get equally good/better players with pedigree on free transfers and lump the cash into wages instead.  I know Peterhead wanted to sign a very good forward from a HFL team but were quoted something like a £25k transfer fee, when they could just go and give someone like Rory McAllister, or a similar player who is proven at a higher level, £500 a week.  Lots of good players in these lower leagues that are easily capable of playing League football, but the element of risk with the transfer fees hinders their chances.  It was similar in the Juniors, especially the West of Scotland; one of the reasons so many of them were against joining the pyramid.  Level the playing field and this risk fades.

Interesting.

The 10/12 team league system has to go.  It's designed for to benefit two clubs only.  I don't get excited about playing anyone 4 times a year PLUS cup games.

100% this.  Down here the lower leagues play 46 game season home and away once NOBODY here ever mentions too many meaningless games in mid table. This is just the shit the SPFL say to keep their darling old firm in power
