At a recent DNA event Neil simpson stated we had no interest in the lowland league as it wasnā€™t a good learning experience for young players. Far better to be in a championship or div 1 club playing in small stadiums with much better players than such a low levelĀ

Ā

would imagine thoughts for this are the same - utilising loans out is a better development pathĀ

Yes I know it happens in a number of European leagues but I don't like it one bit. Even if there are restrictions placed on the colt teams such as not being able to be promoted above a certain level (which in itself would be a very odd situation falsifying the entire league season really) or participate in the national cups it just doesn't strike me as right that any club is allowed two teams in the set up. Whichever way you paint it we'd be depriving another standalone club of the chance to compete. Not on in my book.Ā

In complete agreement with this.
Ā

Can someone explain to me why Highland and lowland leagues would like this voted through?Ā

Assume it would be more difficult to get relegated from league 2 so I can see that angle in the vote but itā€™s been a good thing for Scottish football seeing clubs with ambition climb up the ladder. They want to basically do away with that?Ā

Same reason just about every bastarding club in Scotland gave a new Ibrox based club the green light.

Yes I'm still bitter about that. I enjoy the rivalry with them and games against the buggers but I'd enjoy seeing an Aldi's on the former site of Ibrox a whole lot more.Ā

It's an ABERDEEN board for ABERDEEN people.Ā

See this act you have?

It's been done

It's been done by tens if not hundreds of folk before you over a c15 year spanĀ

This is an interesting article on the number of youth players in SPL first teams and the difficulty in bridging the gap between U18s and first team:Ā https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/65394532

It mentions the Conference league with B teams but says the idea is all but dead, so surprised to see it rearing its head in the P&J

There was a debate on the B team thing in another thread a couple of months back when the Hun's youth academy guy was pushing the idea.

Good article.

I'm surprised Barron has as many starts, and also that I'd only heard of a few of the players listed.Ā

And the one with most starts is shite.

I think we've got a pretty young squad unless told otherwise,Ā  but is Clarkson and Duk were giving minutes to. Previously it was Richardson and Morris. Duncan may make their list before the season ends too - he must be just outside now.

So plenty emphasis on young players here, just not young Scottish players.Ā

But if they're no better than Morris and Richardson...

Again I know it's slightly off topic but a larger league would help teams and players developmentĀ

Would it. God talked about a bigger league on sportsound one week and said it was crap thatā€™s why they changed it from 18 to 10 teamsĀ

There seemed to be an unspoken aspect of that article - more "meaningless" games would help bring through players.

I'm generally not a fan of the idea, but looking at our current first team, Duk came though Benfica B, so if it can be done right then maybe it's worth looking at.

I wasnā€™t around then so can only go with what god saidĀ

Neither was I. But I am now, and it's not great. It was a lot better in the past to be fair, but maybe its had its day?

However, all in, I think Scottish football is producing more, better youngsters than we have in a long time.

The national team is evidence of that, as is the number of Scottish youngsters getting picked up by big teams in England and even Italy (although I think the diminished finances there play a larger part than anyone is letting on just now).

The problem is we don't get to see enough of them here for long enough.Ā

They only call it meaningless up here because they want 4 fucking Glasgow derbys . Most other leagues seem to work just fine. It would also lessen the pressure on some managers. Also from everyone's point of view playing each other twice a season makes the games far more interesting. If we for example held both Glasgow teams at home then lost away but kept winning against the rest we'd be in a title race. The chance of doing that when playing them 4 times is very much reducedĀ

It would definitely make a title challenge from outwith the top 2 more sustainable.Ā

Win every other game (or as close as you can) and go into 4 matches a season (2 at home) with every chance of a couple of half decent results winning the league.

Certainly more doable than the current set up.
