Aberdeen Book - Help Required

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I am currently writing a book about Aberdeen throughout this season called ‘Former Glories And New Beginnings’ – it should be available round about September time – and am also in the planning stage of something about the Dutch players that the Dons have had, ie: Snelders, Ten Caat, Gillhaus, Van Der Ark, Van De Ven, etc, but also including the, dare I say it, less heralded ones such as Touzani, Bus, etc.

Does anyone have any particular memories of any of the Dutch Dons, any stand-out moments, funny anecdotes, feelings of what they brought to the club, etc?

Please feel free to be as expressive as you like if you would like to share. Probably best not to reply on here, though – my email is: books.nickbrown@gmail.com

I thank you so much for any help, memories, thoughts, you might share.

Cheers all !

Nick

Good luck. Ghillhaus goal against the Huns was a thing of beauty, Wednesday night if I recall. Theo’s save against the Tim’s in the Ken shoot out, Van der Ark’s flick on for Mason’s winner.

Gillhaus "allegedly" being the trigger for the 5-0 capitulation at McDiarmid park in October 1990, and the set too after the game.

Didn’t someone’s dog get molested in the changing room?

He allegedly got chinned by Bett for being late for the bus due to having liaisons with Kennedy Thomson the night before if I recall.

This was part of the alleged story, on the bus on the way back from the match after a 5-0 embarrassment

Allegedly the players/staff were all on the bus waiting to depart Pittodrie for what was then the still relatively new McDiarmid Park....St J had been promoted in the summer so it was our first visit to the new ground. Gillhaus hadn't turned up and they'd waited as long as they could and were just about to leave without him when he supposedly arrived with his bf in tow and wanted to bring him on the bus with him. Was told to fuck off with that idea.

Anyway McLeish was furious, told Smith that Gillhaus better not be in the starting 11 or he wouldn't be playing. Eventually got to McDiarmid very late (well after 2pm). Team hurriedly got changed and out to warm up. Starting 11 meanwhile confirmed that Gillhaus was starting. Within 2 or 3 minutes of starting his warm up, McLeish suddenly fucked off back up the tunnel. Confirmed shortly after that he was out of the team (didn't look injured given how fast he fucked off up the tunnel). Think he was replaced in starting 11 by Gregg Watson IIRC. Anyway St J took a fairly early lead, David Robertson looked "out of sorts" to say the least, was taking a shredding off the Saints right winger and soon got himself booked. Despite this he kept on flying into challenges, the support could all see what was happening and were calling out for Smith to substitute him but to no avail. And to no ones surprise, Robertson gets himself sent off before the half hour had passed.

The rest is just a fucking embarrassment. It's well documented that this was the season we blew the league title against oldco in the final match of the season at Ibrokes. Well a shitty 0-1 victory for us in this match and we'd have won the league on goal difference.

Ten caats version is the one I heard,

Was it Kennedy Thomson his bf ?

I heard that the fighting was on the bus on the way back.

And I've always maintained the league was lost that day at McDiarmid park not the Ibrox decider.

It's funny that no player from that side has ever broken ranks and actually said what happened that day, definitively once and for all.
