Our club's new strategy?

Recommended Posts

Reading through a lot of posts on the forums there seems to be a little bit of panic setting in just now with the season fastly approaching and our squad still far from assembled. We have however made some good signings already, Clarkson permanent deal was a real coup for us, Shinnie is the leader we need, Williams should be a good CB at SPL level and I like the look of Solker so far. Despite this though our squad is not currently strong enough for the season ahead given the players we lost BUT I am sure everyone at the club realises that and will ensure we are much stronger in the next few weeks.

A lot of people are complaining about how we needed more players in earlier and of course that would be desireable but its not always that simple. We could have got more players in by now but I would rather the club tries to add the right quality rather than rush into signings that won't be the correct ones. With European group stage football guaranteed we are in a slightly stronger position that usual to entice players in and need to try and take advantage of this when we can. Very few teams will have all their players in two weeks before the season starts. Similar to other fans I am starting to check the newfeeds a good few times each day hoping theres some good news incoming but I think its important that everyone tries to be as patient as they can as I genuinely believe the club is mostly doing what it can.

Last week I was reading an article about McTominay potentially going to Celtic which hopefully won't happen. They were quoting 70k a week in wages and claiming that Kyogo and McGregor are on 55-60k a week. If we had that sort of money at our disposal we would find it a lot easier to secure our targets quickly and certainly wouldn't lose out to clubs like Trabonspor for key targets.

The club clearly realises that the fans are desperate for a team that can be competitive in Europe and try to close the gap on the gruesome twosome from Glasgow. Our budget won't stretch far enough to get UK based players that will be good enough to do that. You get the odd gem but most of the lower league signings have ended up proving why they were in the lower leagues prior to us signing them. So with that in mind we are clearly targeting previously untapped markets, particularly in Eastern Europe with the hope that we can unearth some more bargains like Miovski and to a slightly lesser extent Ramadani. This is a model which I support as I think it provides a little hope that maybe we can bridge the gap and get better value for our money. Shopping in these markets won't always be succesful though and won't be without complications either at times which I think we are experiencing just now but I still think its very much worth perservering with.

In previous seasons under previous managers we took risks on players who had played at a good level but had been injured a fair bit and people would criticise that BUT if they hadn't been injured so often they probably wouldn't have been within our budget in the first place. The club needs to be creative to try and put a team on the park which can fulfill our dreams and maybe do a Leicester one day which realistically is a massive ask given the way football is these days. Mbappe the world's best player potentially going to Al-Hilal says it all really.

I am more optimistic about this season than I have been in a while. I think we will be 3rd again and expect us to give a decent account of ourselves in Europe even though some games will be challenging. We have players on our books who are exciting (Duk is magic) and hopefully a few more still to arrive. Yes of course we would all like to see us being able to splash big fees on players and I would like to see a little more of the incoming transfer revenue being reinvested as well but lets all try to support what the club are trying to do. I don't want to see us ever just accepting being second best to anyone in the league but I have also seen Aberdeen sides in recent years perform very well against clubs with a miles larger budget and still be somewhat harshly criticised. Negativity can then spiral and then before you know it we are losing to teams we absolutely shouldn't be and the players start to play with fear every week as resentment grows. We need to be ambitious with a touch of realism incorporated.

We will have more chance of success this season if we trust the process, back the team and everyone pulls in the same direction. Signings will come guys and fingers crossed they are succesful ones!

We hardly have a team (defence especially) fit for the first game v Livi, let alone Celtic the following week & we’re completely reliant on MacDonald & Williams being ‘fit’ in time for these games as the Rubics cube will take additional time of work permit also.

It’s not pant pishing to acknowledge that the club has basically been running around more & more like a headless chicken (as far as central defenders go) yet again & only getting more desperate the closer to opening day. So much so we’ll end up claiming how lucky we’ve been to secure long term target/priority Scales for an ‘undisclosed fee’ but only undisclosed because they’ll be too ashamed at the price Celtic have fleeced us for him

That’s genuinely the most boring post about Aberdeen fc I’ve ever read.

Thank for for at least attempting to engage in some civil conversation about the actual football. I don't fully agree but the game is all about opinions and the points you make are valid.

This certainly seems to be the popular opinion. 😂 I won't lose too much sleep over it though as I have no interest in petty squables with fellow fans, seems to be a popular pastime of many on this forum which I find about as boring as a lot of you guys find my post. 😂

Have a nice and enjoyable day guys! 👀 👀

Well....to engage on 2 points.

The 'quality not quantity' mantra raises its head every single season.....almost always at this point where we realise that the 1st match is heading towards us like a train and that our team is far from ready for it. The irony always is that generally by this point we've made any 'quality' signings that we're going to make. The rest tend to be mediocre squad fillers and desperate last-minute loans.

And to follow up from that, this isn't a season that we can really afford to go into unprepared. A tough league start leads into a hectic 4 month period where we'll have tough games pretty much twice every week, and we don't really have the luxury of saying 'but the transfer window lasts until the end of August and it'll be OK'.

I don't think it's pant pishing to say that ....as it stands....we're worryingly under-prepared for the season to come, especially in defence. I can't imagine with the squad that we have at this moment, that we'll be able to compete on two fronts.

If we had more money we could sign better players more easily?

This is a revelation. Someone tell the chairman quick.

You make a lot of valid points. Sadly some of the comments made in reply to your post sums up the fact that many people on this forum want instant success and are totally unrealistic in what the club can realistically achieve.

To be fair the typical approach to transfers on here is to moan like fuck about paying any fee whatsoever then demand millions for the same player a few months later if any journalist 'links' them with someone else.

I don’t think we're much weaker than where we finished last season (CBs aside) but we're definitely stronger than when we started it.

Big improvement at right back, extra forward and Clarkson is better now than a year ago. We're probably stronger at CB than when we started the season as well.

Depth is needed in most positions and hopefully that depth has a bit of quality about it.
