Just the best player in the period. I can see an argument for Haaland winning but Messi rightly won IMO. Messi outperformed Mbappe at PSG & at the WC, so I'm not sure how it could be argued he'd had a better year. Link to comment
Roberto
Is the award for winning the World Cup? If it is then yes a few players for Argentina could have won. Julio Alvarez then if you're basing it on that who won more as well... It's sentimental vote this time round, everyone knows Haaland was a better player this year. Complete sentiment vote this year and it has become a joke vote. Ronaldo should have won it one year Messi got it as well who won more, scored more... it has become a laughable 'award' now. Messi was not the best player over the year but ach he won the World Cup so give it to him. I'm glad others are calling it out for what it is now. Link to comment

It's just that the EPL lovers never watched a single minute of him play at PSG. He was then the best player at the WC and captained his team to victory. A worthy winner. Messi should have about 13 Balon d'ors tbh. He was pretty much the best player in the world every year for a decade and a half. Link to comment

My point was winning the World Cup trumps everything else in football (esp the way he did) - likewise mbappe he also had a ridiculously good World Cup. as for haaland- I think he’s a tad overrated. arguably not even the best man city player last year. Mbappe is a great player and had a very good World Cup. Messi had a slightly better one. Same number of goal involvements (Mbappe had 1 more goal, Messi 1 more assist). I'd also say Messi's general play and impact on games was greater. We can disagree, there's merit in both viewpoints but Argentina losing to Saudi Arabia hardly matter much when they beat Mbappe's France. 13 minutes ago, Roberto said: Hahaha spoken as if he sits and watches PSG vs Reims on a Tuesday. Watched plenty PSG. Not many more chances to watch the greatest to ever do it. Got to take them while they're still here. 1 Link to comment

Not many more chances to watch the greatest to ever do it. Got to take them while they're still here. Yeah, I watched almost every PSG game on BT Sport last season and Messi's assists were amazing. He put away loads of important goals himself. PSG wobbled like fuck in their last eight league matches, though, they were cruising and they made it look hard. They weren't great in Champions League, they just didn't look deadly against Bayern. Messi at Miami was a masterclass in efficient, genius assists and goal scoring. Miami never made it to the playoffs this season. But when you add in winning the World Cup for Argentina, it seals the deal. Messi is the most efficient of the genius players of all time, his off the ball movement alone is genius, unique. A lot of players huff and puff and waste their energy and don't do much with their touches, but Messi is almost always in the right place at the right time and swiftly works his magic. It will be a long time before we see a player of his genius. Same goes for Ronaldo. Arda Güler of Real Madrid and Turkey is the one I'm looking forward to seeing become the next magical player this decade. Link to comment
