Losing the league at the Huns in 1991

Recommended Posts

Admittedly, we’re winning the lot this season.
However, i’m interested in who from the forum was at the game in 1991 on the final day and what your memories are?

said on another thread (apologies as wasn’t thread relevant)  that we couldn’t get away end tickets and bought 2 outside for the hun enclosure. Nae telly option in those days and had to be there.

probably the worst day of my football watching life..

was pished for about 3 days after that.

I was there. Dons shat the bed. Shame.

I was there, and still have flashbacks of the game.

The most horrible of situations. Not just losing the league, but it was WHERE we lost the league.

The look on the Hun faces at the final whistle was too much for me to bear, and I got out of the place quickly.

Peter Van De Ven's chance. 🙄

I console myself that across the season we didn’t really deserve it if we’re honest.  We came from relative nowhere and very nearly caught them napping.  Had we had an inkling of what was to come of course we’d have said fuck deserving anything give us the bastard trophy.

having said that I’m absolutely of the opinion we weren’t going to be allowed to win it that day Needed to be there with the whole Ferguson up against twelve men from the off mentality.  We didn’t have it.  Shame.

absolute cunt in fact.

Haha

the sheer desire to find something to be angry or sad about cause the dons are flying. These are desperate measures now. Fair fucking play

I watched this the other day. Made me angry seeing Morelos and McGregor again, with their shameful diving.

Overall a pleasant viewing experience though, would recommend.

Hmm, is that fair? You could argue "we didn’t really deserve it if we’re honest" in 1980 as well, but we fucking did.

Table never lies. The team that finishes at the top wins the league. The team that scores the most amount of goals wins the game. How it happens, I don't give a fuck, especially v them bastards.

Correct.  The table doesn’t lie.  My memory is we were a fairly distant 2nd or 3rd for most of the year then went on a mental run right at the end with the Huns shipping points unexpectedly.  And you can’t overstate the relative quality ON PAPER the Huns embarked on buying around that time.

UnDeserved is probably the wrong word particularly when the sons of satan are involved.  Unlikely is maybe better.

I think we would have got a result if Snelders was fit. Think he has a shoulder injury.  Hateley clattered Michael Watt early on and that seemed to shake him.

Paul Mason claimed Jocky Scott and Alex Smith had a falling out over tactics for that game and that is why Jocky left the next season.

100% re Snelders and the very early Hately challenge.

definitely remember the switch to 4-4-2 with Van de Ven (whilst forced) was completely out of character for us, typically blamed on the late Mwell goal the week before meaning we only needed a draw.  Beginning of the end for eh,Smiffy.

I was there - never been back to that shite hole.

Same with me, and will never go back. Hately’s challenge on Watt set the pattern for the whole game. We were never going to get the result we need that day.

I was at the game and my abiding memory of the game was first pies came down on us from above, then cups of piss before seats came raining down on us.

Bastards were destroying their own stadium fucking morons that they are

I was at the bigotdome that day the Huns clearly went out to do physical harm to Micheal Watt straight from the kickoff

Hateley was a cunt that day and always has been I despite the man

Forgot about the diving in that game. 4 from Morelos and tried to get one of ours carded. That's 5 yellow card offenses. McGregor an embarrassment and Goldson gets a free kick for stamping on MacLennan.

Disgusting performance from Clancy

Watched the video, unpleasant to be reminded of McGregor, Kent and Morelos. Pure sub humanity all 3, esp McGregor.

Re the 1991 game. Think we took 23 PTS out of 24 to set up that game.  Still remember the horror of losing. Wasn't at it, was playing football myself in a local park and praying the updates were lies.

My main memory of that day was Smith changing the team to go more defensive after I think 11 wins & 1 draw in our previous 12 league games. Smith never really recovered from that decision.

Looking back we did a fantastic to get so close coming from basically nowhere against a team who were blowing everyone out of the water financially. The huns were arguably the best team in Britain at that time.

I was devastated that day in 91 but I think deep down I expected the huns would probably win in front of a rowdy & packed Ibrox. When I look back now (obviously with the benefit of hindsight) I think I am actually more disappointed losing the 86 in the European Cup Q/F to Gothenburg on away goals than in 91 at Ibrox it's personally my biggest ever disappointment as a Dons fan. We were so close to playing a pretty flaky Barcelona team under Venables in the semifinals of the European Cup I think with Fergie & our hardened european experience at that point we'd have beaten them. Steaua Bucharest won the European Cup that year they were nothing special. We could have conceivably won the European Cup which is mental when you think about that prospect now. The Porto loss in 84 hurt a lot too we would have played that great Juventus team in the final I think they had 7 Italian World Cup winners plus Platini & Boniek.

i listened to it on the radio. was 14. i think i stopped listening after the 2nd one. never felt like we would win it. meh, it is what it is but ive honestly not thought about it at all in 30+ years.

the defeat that sticks in my craw was vs bohemians. i broke a seat kicking it in the south stand. never been that angry at a game

Similar feeling in 92 I think it was, when we were 7 points behind the Filth and flying. Night game at Pittodrie. Sell out. Scalped a ticket outside on Merkland Rd 20 mins before kick off. We absolutely dominated them, Jess was fantastic, The Flying Pig saved a shot at one point by sitting on the ball, and they sneaked a 1-0 win through a Trevor Steven goal I think. Absolutely fucking gutted. We had it in us that year. Always felt like if we’d won that game we would have gone on to win it.
