Any tradesmen/self employed folks in here?

Recommended Posts

Random one... but I started a marketing agency a few years back and we've started rolling out some business management software to local companies.

Not here to drum up business (although I won't turn anyone down), but just wanted to pick folks brains on a few things related to how you run your business.

Obligatory delete if not allowed, but just looking for some pointers and thought I'd give you lot a try!

Firstly, get a reputable, trusted bookkeeper/accountant to look after your company's financial affairs, and do not sign up with any such firm based in the Isle of Man.

Secondly, (unless you have already, of course) get familiar with the basics of business law and contract law. The Scots Law textbook is a resource I'd highly recommend and as a reference if unsure of the legitimacy of any business activities you are party to (in terms were you may be shafted because of non-payment or withholding of payment for your goods and services by one of your clients for whatever reason).

Only advice I'd give is...

Everything... EVERYTHING... is covered by a signed contract.

EVERYTHING!

No, "Och, just this once" or "Ach, it'll never come up" or "No need to formalise it, I trust you."

And have a good lawyer you can build a relationship with.

Cheers! My question was probably phrased poorly - we've been in business for a couple of years now with both legal and financial support 👌🏼

I was more looking for common "problems" in the day-to-day running of a trade business in the hope that I can best frame our services to solve said problems.

Sorry min. My misinterpretation.

It's alright though, I won't charge you for my "advice'.:checkit:
