Sven Goran Eriksson

Recommended Posts

Just some stats to take into account :-

Sven qualified for every major tournament and was unlucky not to go further in two of them. I seem to remember England not qualifying for the World Cup in 94' and having a stinker at the Euros in 92' and 2000. I also remember them not qualifying for the Euros in 84' and having another disaster in 88'. They failed to qualify for the World Cup in 74' and 78', so i really don't think that Svens record is that bad.

Sven's England stats :-

67 matches spanning over 5 years with only 4 competitive losses (3 inside 90 mins).

He never lost a competitive match by more than 1 goal

He is the only England manager in post for 3 or more major tournaments not to fail to qualify for any

He took England to their first European Championship quarter-finals on foreign soil since 1972 - their third ever

England earned the second seed of the 2006 World Cup, ahead of all other European teams and only behind top-ranked Brazil

Sven's club stats:-

IFK Gothenburg

So Sven is touting himself for the job at Newcastle.

Is he a useless manager, or has he got a lot to offer a club like Newcastle?

Well he did fine at Sampdoria and Benfica, so he may be the man to get them back on an even keel.

The previous few managers have signed some very ropey players. Duff, Parker and Owen are the class of player that they should be signing. Need a couple of good, solid defenders to shore things up.

Do you agree that Newcastle seem to think they are a bigger club than they actually are?

Absolutely. And spoiled by the success they had during Keegan's time, when to be fair, they were a magnificent team with good players in every position. Now they only have three good players, two of whom have been very injury prone.

But they are a team that ought to be in amongst the UEFA Cup places.

I guess from your earlier post that you mean Duff, Parker and Owen?

What about :-

Obafemi Martins?

Kieron Dyer?

Shay Given?

Emre Belazoglu?

Nicky Butt?

As for their belief they are a big club, you're prob right that they should be battling for a place in the UEFA cup, as they are no bigger than the likes of Bolton, Portsmouth, etc.

Obafemi Martins? Jury's still out for me. Could come good, but he's no Les Ferdinand.

Kieron Dyer? When he's fit, yes. But all too often he's too much of an individual.

Shay Given? I think he is a very overrated goalkeeper. Good shot-stopper and that's about it.

Emre Belazoglu? He has talent, but doesn't use it often enough.

Nicky Butt? Good player, but he's a water carrier in the Lennon mould, for me, doesn't contribute as much to the team as Parker (in my opinion).

They should be bigger than Bolton and Portsmouth though, but in the second tier of clubs that include Aston Villa, Spurs and (dare I say it the sleeping giants themselves) Leeds Utd.

Hmmm, I wouldn't agree that they are bigger than Portsmouth or Bolton.

Villa, Spurs and Leeds have a history that is littered with trophies.

I see it that you've got the big three of Man United, Arsenal and Liverpool. Chelsea have barged their way in to make it four now, although this may not last depending on what Abramovich is doing to make Chelsea a genuine force in the long run.

Then you've got the likes of Spurs, Everton, Villa, Man City that have everything to challenge, but they just can't get it right for whatever reason. Clubs with history AND potential.

Then you've got those, who'll have good seasons here and there, but don't genuinely have enough in the locker to sustain a consistent challenge for the top places (see Blackburn, Newcastle, Middlesboro, et al).

And finally you've got the group who flit between the bottom of the Premiership and the Championship (Charlton, Wigan, Sheff Utd, et al).

and they didnt really have any success under Keegan because at the end of the day they didnt win anything.

As for Newcastle being a club that are perhaps bigger than they think they are, possibly, in which case it'll be the perfect job for Eriksson as England are a country that think they are better than they are and he'll be used to the pressure of doing things right but still getting slated for it.

Newcastle are a massve club. They may have been starved of success and been overburdened by underperforming players but they are much bigger than Portsmouth, Bolton and the like.

That said they've won f*ck all.

Agree.

One team cities always have great support from their inhabitants.

I don't think Newcastle are a massive club. They have a massive following in Newcastle, but I wouldn't call them a massive club in the slightest.

That's what I was getting at. Man United are a massive club. Liverpool are a massive club. Arsenal are a massive club. Newcastle are not.

Portsmouth have a fanatical fan-base and are a club that I think have a big future.

Bigger supported club than Liverpool since Liverpool is only 4th this season in EPL.

I used to live in Newcastle, and within the Northumberland they have an enormous local support.... However, Liverpool is a global brand, much in the same way as Manchester United, to say Newcastle are a bigger supported club than Liverpool is daft.

Don't talk balls. Liverpool have a massive supporter base compared to Newcastle.

Last time I checked Liverpool were 3rd in the Premiership......... :hysterical:

I think the point being made was that their crowds are bigger, though the new stadium will put an end to that.

No-one would dispute that Liverpool are globally massive club but to suggest that Newcastle aren't "massive" in the context of English football is wrong.

Behind only the likes of Arsenal, Man U, Liverpool and Chelsea.

What constitutes a "massive club". Just because Newcastle have a fanatical and large local support, they have a great ability to win jack all. A bit like saying Leeds Utd or West Ham are massive clubs.

We have neither a large, nor fanatical local support and we have the same abilty to win jack all but we still hear that we are a big club and that 3rd is a minimum requirement. Surely we are no bigger than Killie/Hibs/Dundee Utd?
