Wester Hailes Skins
Edinburgh, by accident or intention, manages to hide its rougher areas from visitors. Other cities might have inner city deprivation. Or you go through their rougher areas to get to the centre. You could visit Edinburgh 100 times from Aberdeen, including football. You're never gonna see any of Wester Hailes, Niddrie, Muirhouse or any of these outlying schemes. Same for tourists who think we all live in the Royal Mile and eat shortbread. 1 Link to comment

The north end of Lothian Road and surrounds was always pretty sleazy (think the Ambassador Sauna was finally shut down?) but you’re right - the main approaches into Edinburgh bypass these areas. The top end of Lothian Road starts to become Tollcross. Which I wouldn't say is deprived, mostly tenements, but has had its share of trouble over the years. Toll-X / Tollcross Rebels a famous old school gang. Lapdancing bars also from Tollcross to top of Grassmarket. So yeah, a kinda tattoo parlour, lapdancing type area. Link to comment

Don Fonte
Stayed in Edinburgh for quite a few years. A wonderful city. Played football in some of the less salubrious areas at times. Could be interesting. Link to comment

Ah, the Broadsword - uncles and cousins were regulars, my faither used to go in when we were visiting. I popped in, on my own, mid 90's, it was if I had stepped into a western saloon, everyone stopped and stared. Went in a few times over the years for a pint with my faither and uncles, not the usual sort of place I would frequent. Link to comment
Beachend Bootboy
Was only ever in the Broadsword once. A pool match when I played for the St Clements. No issues that night but it was a mini demographic of Tilly. Mongs, junkies, alkies, scum, pond life and other assorted bottom feeders. Link to comment

I'm surprised the councillors of Edinburgh City Council would allow such grotesque and repugnant establishments to be allowed to operate and, in turn, tarnish the poshness and touristy nature of Auld Reekie.😄 There must be a market for it though (councillors, executives, the mayor, MSPs, etc.) to enable the parlours to trade. Good for the local economy. 1 Link to comment

One of my colleagues said he saw one of his old Edinburgh uni professors going in during his lunch break. I’d suggest your theory isn’t far from the truth. Link to comment

They only way they can operate is with the hard cash of highly-paid folk like professors et al. and having councillors onside. The same applies to the quines who offer their services in Aberdeen. Yeah I lived off Leith walk. At one point the road with Robbie's on the corner had 2 'saunas' on it. I was always too scared to go in... Link to comment

There's always a big black bouncer (male or female) in them places, with their sheer presence meant to intimidate you. Once you pay your money on entry, even though you end up with a boot, you're obliged to stay to try and get your money's worth. Around the corner from Leith Walk is a bar called The Regent where I went with the Granite City Reds the once. Never realised it's a fucking poofs pick up bar. Even the bars around there cater for the oldest profession. Link to comment

ericblack4boss
A total shithole out in the country is the Commercial at Insch, The nicotine stained decor has adorned the walls and ceilings there since the 1970s, Whilst every othe establishment in the area has closed or been closed for long spells that fucking dump has continued remain open, The last I heard the entertainment that was on show was two dogs shagging in the bar. Also it's not unknown for the clientele to be given oral sex whilst sat at bar 1 Link to comment
