Vogts demands credit

Recommended Posts

Former Scotland manager Berti Vogts believes he should be given some of the credit for the side's improved results following his departure.

"I know people laughed at some of the things I did when I was there," Vogts told the News of the World.

"But maybe we will all be laughing together when Scotland are in Austria or Switzerland next summer.

"In my time with Scotland, I brought in a lot of new players and that always makes getting good results difficult."

Scotland top qualifying Group B in the race for Euro 2008 following a surprise 1-0 win in France.

Vogts suggests the players who emerged under his leadership and then flourished under Walter Smith then Alex McLeish could be Scotland internationals "for 10 years or more".

The German, now manager of Nigeria, had two-and-a-half years in charge of Scotland before resigning in November 2004.

He had given debuts to many current internationals and does not accept criticism of his reign.

"My record in competitive qualifying games was good, although the results in the friendlies were bad," he added.

Can anyone post a list of Scotland players handed their debut by Vogts? I bet most of them were ***king sh*te.

I'll see your Lee Miller and raise you Scott Dobie....or Kevin Kyle....or Stephen Thompson.......or Robbie Stockdale....or...you get the picture. Vogts was an utter trumpet. I'll have no truck with this revisionist nonsense.

Stephen Crainey and Stephen Caldwell as well. I agree with your point. Its very easy for Vogts to say now "Oh look Scotland are doing well since I was sacked, therefore I deserve credit for it"

Thing is Smith and then McLeish have created a team which while not technically gifted play as a team and there is a real spirit among the squad now - these factors were never present (apart from a couple of games) when Vogts was in charge.

His main obstacle was he had no prior knowledge of Scottish football, hence he was picking misfits left, right, and centre. It wasn't his fault necessarily, he just should never have been appointed in the first place.

And David Taylor admitted as much in the papers the day. Basically the SFA were trying to copy the English FA who had just appointed a foreign coach in Eriksen and thought they could do the same with Berti. Should never have been given the job and when it was clear he wasnt going to get results, should have been sacked a lot sooner.

Did Vogts cap Bob Malcolm? Christ, i've clearly managed to erase that one from mind.

There's an example of a repressed memory if ever there was one!!

Never fully capped for Scotland but did make 3 appearances for the Scotland "Futures" team between 2003 and 2005. Thankfully we didn't get desperate enough to cap him at full international level!
