Good question. Over the years, I've made thousands of visits to pubs. Alcoholism is something I've seen and something I know about, without ever having been so weak personally to get close to it. And it is weak, it's a total lack of self discipline.

You got to be drinking daily and at hoorin levels to get hospitalised by it. It's an insidious drug. It takes over and they don't see it coming. There's no tipping point into alcoholism, it gradually sucks them in.

Don't think beer damages the liver, it's nips that need avoided. Worse comes to the worst get it swapped out for a new one, good to go for another 20 years.

Just felt like shit and stomach started swelling up. Light scarring of the liver due to Blutoesque levels of alcohol abuse during COVID. Just keeping me in for observation  and to drain all this fluid shit off.

You may need to stop drinking for a lengthy amount of time for your liver to recover, most certainly don't drink spirits.

I stopped for nearly 22 months(6 May 2006 - 24 Feb 2008), was told to stop months sooner but waited till the end of the football season.

Good luck and get well soon.

It was too early to head to the bar,

So fridge sauntered off to the Spar,

two bottles of Jack,

Hottie I’ll tak,

But 3 steps later his face meets the tar.

He’s out, somebody called for attention,

For fucks sake lads what was your intention,

I said he’s a pisshead,

Who will soon be dead,

If we don’t have a wee intervention.

I used to think that. I also wrongly thought that some had a bigger capacity for drink too which meant they would be "immune" or were at less risk of alcoholism.

The key word was dependency. You're talking about weed in particular. Some argue it's not "addictive" and therefore you can't become "dependent". That would be wrong. That's when the problems start.

I personally would classify being dependent on any drug as insane personal behaviour and functioning, happy tokers in their 50's after daily use for decades to the point that they must smoke every day, they don't exist in my experience.

There's a fine line between alcoholism and alcohol dependency though min.

An alcoholic can refrain from drink for a indefinite period of time, then weakly give in to psychological stimuli that triggers a binge.

Alcohol dependency is what millions of us, including myself, experience to get us through an entire day or part of a day, due to these tyrannical restrictions that have been placed on all of us from last year. No psychological stimuli required as it comes naturally.
